Dungeons & Dragons Lite: Am I the Only One?

I admire the desire to simplify, but for me it isn't a problem. No matter how many sourcebooks I allow, the majority of my players gravitate toward tried-and-true archetypes--the priest, the wizard, the rogue, the warrior. On the other hand, I love having dozens of sourcebooks from which to draw inspiration; for me as a DM, it keeps the game fresh. For my players, it means new places, things, and creatures they've never before encountered.

Were I to ever study abroad, however, the only books I'd bring with me are the core three. I don't need anything else but my imagination to run a campaign.

No, you are not alone. But it seems most people like you are now playing C&C.

Me, I like keeping the game fresh.

I suppose there's two ways of keeping the game fresh. One can buy countless new books, or one can use one's imagination. I prefer the latter. ;)

We usually run with the 3 core plus one setting book (3.0 or 3.5... right now 3.5).

Anything else is probably imported by the DM: monsters or adventures mainly, sometimes other sources import flavor:

here are the things the dm has imported from recently:
Dungeon Magazine
and because of that MM 3

Only the Dungeon magazine made it to the table.

I'd add a third way that makes the best of both worlds: Buy countless new books, and use one's imagination.

Sure - that works just fine.

(Mind you - I'd be switching to 3.5 rules on haste mighty quick, but otherwise, vanilla 3.0 works just fine).

Heroes of Happiness isn't really the name of a sourcebook, right?

Quite, actually. They're the high-level heroes of my Principality. However, I have high turnover as they level up to Epic Levels and move on to the Kingdom of Ennui.
