Duties of a Best Man

Whatever you decide to do in the way of a bachelor party, make sure you do the cliched best man thing and take the groom aside at some point and try to talk him out of getting married. A good time to do it is right before the wedding. It is your duty, at least according to every cheesy wedding-themed movie/TV show I've ever seen.

Being the incredible geek that I am, at my bachelor party we gamed all night. Doom 2 had also just been released (we're talking almost 11 years ago), so we had players swapping out to go play on the PC. We did not have a stripper because my future wife gamed with us. :)

I'd have to side with the conservative faction here. A bachelor party that does not involve depravities of myriad forms (strippers, strong liquor) and which is not an all blokes affair is not a bachelor party-- it's just a party. Don't get me wrong, I like parties. There are, however, different kinds, with different meanings, and different mores.

Afterall, who would say, "I had a tea party," when in fact they went bowling and downed suds?

Btw... It may well indeed be the very last time the groom will ever be able to get in a full night's game without huffs, sighs, and pouting, or interrupting conversations.

I was just at the wedding of someone from my gaming club last weekend, and at their bachelor party a few nights before.

It was also not a "beer & strippers" event, him not liking alcohol and never being one much for strip clubs. (also, as he noted, his fiancee didn't mind him looking at girls so there was no "forbidden" aspect, and most of his friends didn't have a lot of money and a strip club can get pricey).

We ended up playing capture the flag with water guns and wiffle bats in a city park, watching movies into the night, ordering pizza, and doing typical "hanging out" type things.

A bit of wisdom he shared about his unorthodox bachelor party: "Some people see a bachelor party as one last stand of debauchery, I see it as a summation of your time as a bachelor. I never drank or went to strip clubs before because I wasn't interested, so why should I now? My time as a bachelor was spent with my friends, gaming and hanging out, just like now."

I really that that perspective. I've been following this thread because I have to do the same thing (but in about a year or so), and I think this is the best piece of advice so far.

Naked women is a close second, though.

Mine was almost 13 years ago. We started early with a short road trip for some whitewater rafting, then back into town for the traditional bar hopping, including strip joints.

No matter what the decision, the best advice is to do it the weekend before the wedding. I felt pretty rough the next day, and was glad to have a week to recover before the big event. (Although I was still "kidnapped" by a few close friends the night before the wedding, but they went much easier on me with the official festivities out of the way.)

Oh, man, that's beautiful... I'm all teary eyed.

Did he pick that up on Oprah, or Dr. Phil? :]
