I would make the PC dwarves all from the same clan - clannishness is a dwarven trait. You could use the variant rules in Tasha's to give your pregens more variety, and include one "dwarf by adoption".
Poison gas. Causes poisoned status (no damage), so dwarves are immune without needing to save.
If your theme is dwarves, then you bad guys should also be dwarves. Have Duergar, aided by a traitor on the council, be behind the goblinoid attack. The Dragon Age games and Terry Pratchett's The Fifth Elephant are good sources for dwarven politics.
