Dwarf Mounts

In the PHB p113 under horse, it says "A horse (other than a pony) is suitable as a mount for a human, elf, half-elf, or half-orc... A pony is a suitable mount for a dwarf, gnome, or halfling."

Does this break the rule about mount sizes? It seems to imply, by omission, that dwarves can’t ride horses. They can’t ride dogs either.

So what is it? Do dwarves ride horses or ponies? Or both?

My group ran into this recently. The parties only Dwarf had been riding a pony. Than the player took a look at the characters weight and the pony's weight allowance. And realized that his Dwarf was breaking the pony's back. Shortly there after the party received three purebred warhorses as payment for recovering a noble's body. The Dwarf's player picked out a nice Light Warhorse. I think the player should look at the characters weight and see if the poor pony can carry it. Or you could look into a Dire Boar. :)

Good point. I just checked 3.5, and they seemed to have fixed this there. In 3.5, dwarves ride horses, not ponies. Damn frustrating, if you ask me

Yeah thats a silly spill over from rl. But IMHO the Dwarf should be riding something like the Mongol Horse - perfect size and is a horse NOT a pony
