Dwarves and Gnomes are NOT to be used for comedic effect

Gnomes are, potentially, a lot more than comic relief...
Agreed, but they very rarely are. It's probably because the game does so little to define them.

For my homebrew-in-progress, I'm using the Gnomes as an off-shoot of the Fey. With old stories that suggest they may even be the result of an incredibly unlikely pairing of a Fey princess and a Dwarf :D The Dwarves, in particular, find this preposterous, though they ARE inexplicably fond of Gnomes. The Gnomes, for their part, aren't saying much about it, and seem to either believe it or not, depending on who you talk to.

I sort of envision them as not taking the other races very seriously, and having an agenda of their own. They CAN be funny, at times, but no more so than most other races. And between their illusion powers and their affinity for animals and the land, it's not wise to get on their bad side. Plus, the Fey may decide to take it personally. And no one wants that.

That's probably a good idea for novels.

However, they always have been (and likely will be for the forseeable future!) the butt of jokes in my game. My players hate the short folk, and keep the jokes coming. I haven't seen a player take a short character in 3+ years...

One character idea I've always wanted to try is a gnome who believes he's posessed by a badger or wolverine spirit. Probably a Barbarian/Rogue. Just this little, freaky, angry guy growling and biting and whippin' up on you with an axe. Then he starts to rage. I figured that would be downright terrifying for most opponents.

Unfortunately, I keep getting shafted into playing a cleric. It's just not as impressive when your party is set up so that you're little more than the pit crew for the fighters.

I play a gnome illusionsist in a PBEM, and he gets his fair share of jokes played on him, but tends to get back at them with some carefully-chosen illusion spells. And they all know that if they ever seriously upset him, he'll do stuff a bit more drastic. Being the only non-multiclasses spellcaster does lend some power credibility. He's also looked to at the party leader in dire situations, so I don't know where that comes from.

And, to be honest, he does bring a little on himself, he keeps threatening to create an illusion in the sky of the paladin and the bard ingage in sexual acts... they're running a roamtic roleplay thing off the side, and it's a much better source for fun :)

Oh, that will do wonders for making them less comedic. Make them faeries.

SD
No. They're Fey. Fairies are little pixie irritants. Fey are often capricious, sometimes downright mad, beings of varied form and power that are more magic than flesh.

You don't $^%# with the Fey. 'Least not more than once.
