D&D 5E Dwarves are the best spellcasters?

Gradine

The Elephant in the Room (she/her)
My last 3.5 character was a dwarven transmuter who hulked out (Enlarge) and waded into melee. Not the most efficient or optimized character by far but fun as hell.

5e ironically makes that character both easier (+2 Con/+2 Str! Free equipment proficiencies! Shame about shields though) and harder (Concentration; only have one buff spell active at a time) to run. On balance I think 5e build wins; that character could stack absurd numbers of spells (Enlarge/Haste/Impr. Invis. was a fun combo, never got high enough for Tenser's) but the piss poor BAB really held it back.

Dwarven Wizards

They say there used to be dwarven wizards back in the ages past. Something bad happened, and now there aren’t any. And considering the subject is taboo to dwarves of the current age (who may not even know why), if a dwarven wizard was to exist, they would probably be shunned and persecuted.
