Dying in a dream

The most vivid death in my dreams I remember was when I was attacked by this flying burrowing razor-beetle-fish thing. I felt it digging into my stomach, and then I woke up. Like Bullgrit's dream, I woke up with a horrible stabbing pain in my gut, which didn't go away for some time.

Worse though were the night terrors. When you're asleep and you feel as if you're awake, paralyzed as something presses on your chest and grabs your throat. I've had them a few times, but the worst was where I could feel myself waking up, and the nightmare assailant actually dragged me by the neck back into the dream. At least, that's what it felt like.

Demiurge out.

I tend to die a lot in my "story" dreams. Like when the world is being overrun by zombies or aliens or mutant Nazis, and I'm fighting them all - eventually I get to the point where I'm surrounded or can't get out. And then I think, "Man, I can't get out of this and keep up my suspension of disbelief. I guess I have to die." And then the dream isn't cool any more - not because I've died, but because the story is over. Sometimes I give myself super powers and blow them all up, but it still feels cheap.

They are pretty cool dreams up until that point, though. ;)

edit: I've also died in some of my "D&D" dreams, but it's a different sort of death. That's where you get hit by a couple of arrows and you realize that you're down to -7 hp or something and you just have to sit there and watch the rest of the fight. Never been hit with a save-or-die spell in my dreams. ;)

Those are pretty cool dreams too, since I incorporate the D&D rules into my dreams. "I can only move 30' since I attacked, and that orc is going to hit me! I hope he misses my AC!" etc.

I've died multiple times in my dreams. Various things can happen at that point.
Sometimes I jolt awake before the event, and sometimes I just become some outside observer after that.

I used to have a lot of nightmares, and learned to lucid dream at one point. A neat skill that lets you take control of your dreams if you can just remember that you're dreaming.

One dream I had involved myself getting into a car crash... Just at that instant, I remembered I was dreaming and rather than jolting awake, I stopped everything.
The car froze, the car I was about to hit froze just as I was about to die... Very weird experience. At some point, I pulled myself out of the frozen car, and let it all go again (and gave up control of the dream)... but I had forgotten about the guy in the other car who died in the wreck. The dream ended with the poor schmoe unable to get into heaven due to his death being delayed by a few minutes (he essentially missed his reservation), and he was forced to wander in limbo for eternity.

Man, that dream sucked.

Sometimes after I play a little too many computer games, I have to select myself to move myself in my dream.

The almost dying isn't as bad as when I figure out that I'm dreaming but can't wake up. I yell and no sound comes out. I try and open my eyes. Sometimes my mind toys with me, and I open my eyes, look around, try and yell and no sound comes out. Drat, I'm still dreaming. I believe that my record was five layers of opening my eyes to find out that I'm still dreaming before I finally woke up. Needless to say, getting back to sleep after that is not a priority...

The only dream I honestly can remember has different variations on the same theme. They all start by being afraid of someone or something; I become paralyzed with fear. I cannot react or respond, like I'm frozen in time. Invariably, a boulder or some object falls on me and I can't move to get out of the way. I usually awake in a cold sweat. The feeling of not being able to move or react is etched in my brain. :heh:
