Earning Feats

When I hit 3rd level, and earn my 3rd level feat....do I Have to spend it, or can I bank it?

Whatever your response, can you back it with where the rule is?

I feel very strongly that not only should a PC earn his feat through roleplaying expenditure of effort, and use of time inherent in acquiring a powerful new ability. This requires him to describe his training session in exacting detail, as well as the mental processes that lead him to develop insight into how to better accomplish his goals.

But according to the rules, you have to spend it when you level up. No banking.

The specific text in the PHB reads:

"At 3rd level and every three levels thereafter (6th,9th, 12th, 15th, and 18th), he or she gains another feat. Feats are gained according to character level, regardless of individual class levels."

One interpretation of that is the character gains the feat at 3rd, and only 3rd. Holding it would technically mean the character gets the feat at 4th or later, which goes against the rules. Sure one could say it's reasonable to let the character hold a feat, but it's technically not supported by the rules in this case and thus becomes a house rule.

The only relevant text i found, is in the DMG p197 "How PCs Improve".

Not that it says anything about banking, but I personally find that it connects logically.

What happens when you have someone who hoards feats so that he can spend them all at a later level to purchase more feats that require character level 6, caster level 6. or BAB +6, for example, than he would otherwise have had?

I understood what you meant. The reason I asked for an example is because I can't think of a banking fraud that would unbalance the game. Most powerful feats need of other lesser feats, so I can't see this getting out of hand.

...OTOH i trust you, perhaps, have some deadly combos in mind.
