Easilly assembled encounters, more character driven adventures?

If X is in the rules X must be used.

Lizard has convinced himself that he can't deviate from the RAW in 4e, despite giving us numerous examples of him doing so in 3e. As Hong and I pointed out previously, the problem with his encounter design is himself.

I have a question for everyone here: How much time do you think is too much time to spend on preparing for a game of D&D?

Depends.

Story and plot stuff? I'm willing to spend maybe an hour for each two hours of gameplay.

Stats and mechanics? Maybe 10 minutes per hour of gameplay, at the most.

If a Hogboblin PC wants to become a Hobgoblin Warcaster, he simply can't. He is a PC. He is living a different life then the Hobgobling Warcaster.

Did anyone know that this man is genius? Because he is.

Shifting focus away from the DM, though, it's more fun for the players to see new things. If they see a monster with "Improved Disarm" it's mundane.

But when fighting a monster with an alien, new attack, the players are suddenly thrown for a loop. When they fight that monster , they really get to enjoy being able to interact with something new. Sense of wonder and all that.
