Eberron: Changlings and Skills

Dark Psion

First Post
I was reading my Eberron book as my TV was showing some people climbing one of those "Rock Walls". The person they were showing was reaching for the next handhold, but it was just out of their reach. I thought, "Too bad you are not a changeling, then you could just make your arm longer." Hmmmm???

The Change Shape ability does allow you a +10 bonus to your Disguise skill, but could you use it to enhance others skills?
How would you rule doing that?
I don't want to waste a feat on a "natural ability" of a race, but there needs to be a chance of failure.

The best way might be to make a Concetration skill check to make an "exotic change shape" attempt.
Concentration (New Use: Must have a natural ability to change shape)

Exotic Change Shape: Just as you can modify your physical form to disguise yourself, you can also make modifications that can boost certain skills. The DC you beat determines the racial bonus you gain and you must actually have at least 2 ranks in that skill to know what needs to be done to enhance your ability.

You can Take 10 or Take 20 to get the form just right, but because you are forcing your body into an unusual form, your Concentration can be disrupted in the same manner that a spell can be disrupted. If you lose your Concentration, your form will return to what it was just before the modification and you loose any bonuses you gained.

DC Bonus
10 = +2
20 = +4
25 = +6
30 = +8
35 = +10

The skills you can modify are;

Balance: You can adjust your center of gravity to a lower point and better set yourself when your need to be balanced.
Climb: By extending your reach and enhancing your grip, you can adapt to the wall your are climbing.
Disable Device: By modifying your shape, you can reach into places others cannot and avoid pressure sensitive triggers.
Escape Artist: By modifying your size, you can shift out of ropes and slip away from another’s grasp.
Hide: By altering your shape, you can fit into areas other’s cannot and you can mute your skin color to better blend into the shadows.
Intimidate: By using subtitle changes or exaggerated features, you can play on a target’s fears.
Jump: By shifting your muscle mass into your legs, you can jump farther.
Listen: By enlarging and moving your ears as a cat does, you can listen better and determine when a sound is coming from.
Move Silently: By using your control of your body’s shape, you can limit to sounds it makes.
Open Lock: With longer, more dexterous fingers, you can better manipulate a lock.
Perform: While your disguise ability will allow you to take a pleasing shape, you can also alter how your body moves when you Dance or perform in other physical ways.
Ride: You can adapt your shape to your mount’s form and flow with it’s movements.
Search: By enlarging your eyes, ears and nose, you can enhance your sensory acuity.
Sleight of Hand: By adapting your body to move in ways others cannot, you can avoid being seen doing things secretly.
Spot: By enlarging your eyes and nose, you become more aware and alert.
Survival: By adapting to the weather around yourself, you can better gain the Fortitude save bonus against the weather’s effects.
Swim: You can make your shape more sleek and lengthen your hands and feet as well as adding a membrane of skin between them to swim faster.
Tumble: By shifting as you move, you can move in ways others cannot.
Use Rope: By lengthening your fingers, you can better tie and untie knots.

Other exotic uses of your Change Shape ability are;

You can willingly Blind, Deafen or close your nose by sealing them shut and avoid Gaze, Sonic and Scent based attacks. Since you seal them close, there in no chance you will accidentally open them.

When you are “holding your breath”, you can seal your nose and mouth and gain a bonus to your Concentration check because you cannot accidentally swallow any water.

If a skill potentially lets you get a +10 on 19 different skills, as well as make yourself temporarily immune to several nasty things and even give you a bonus to the skill itself, how would you consider that "wasting a feat"?

If you ask me, the ability as you've suggested it is worth 19 feats at least- one for each skill. Otherwise, it's FAR too powerful. +10 on Intimidate? Don't mind if I do. +10 on Hide? Sure, I'll take that too. Heck, I'm already a 10th level character, now nobody can see me at all! Heck, I don't even need to be a Rogue- with a +10 bonus to every skill a Rogue could possibly need (give or take one or two), Changeling Wizards and Sorcerers would be the most skilled combinations in the game.

Interesting idea, but it wouldn't work.

It's a cool idea, but rather broken as written. I'd make it DC 20 for a +2 bonus, and no more. At least in the case of the changeling, whose shapeshifting abilities are rather limited. I might also require a feat to do it in the first place, though if I did I'd probably reduce the DC to 15. I'd probably also reduce the list of skills it could affect - since shapeshifting doesn't normally affect your senses, it shouldn't affect things like Search/Spot/Listen, for example. Let's see... I'd allow it to work on Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, and Swim. Things where rather non-subtle manipulations could affect success. It would, of course, be rather obvious what you're doing if anyone sees you. With a list that small, DC 10 with a feat sounds appropriate, and matches with the "Aid another" mechanic as well.

Make it a shifter feat, any skills that your type of shifter gains a bonus to the stat in he can use for the check, give it a +2 at dc 10 and move the dc up by 5 for each further point the increase is up to a maximum of your bonus in that stat.

I think that would make it fine ;)

Really cool idea! Though it's too tough as written. I agree that these changes would make it balanced:

I'd make it a feat for anyone with the shapechanger subtype: a DC 15 Concentration check yields you a +2 racial bonus to Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, or Swim (but only one at a time).
