The original system, I stopped around 3rd edition or so, had many similiarities to AD&D. For example, many of the stats were about the same. Damage seemed about on and hit points could be faked for monsters, as they tended to have a lot more than the characters. This was all years ago (10+) so I could be remembering wrong but I recall the hardest things to figure out were like magic resistance, damage from poison, and experience point values.
