Eberron Novel: Marked for Death (Spoilers/Opinions)

So, who's read this book?

First off a short disclaimer. Its no secret that I love Eberron. I also have a lot of respect for Matt Forbeck as a game developer, though this is one of his first novels that I read. (At least that I can remember)

Ok, moving on.

I really feel that someone really dropped the ball with this novel. Either Matt didnt do his research (which I honestly can't belive) or WOTCs departments, Novel and R&D simply arent communicating.

Now, I could be wrong. I read the entire novel in a single day. But according to the novel, clerical healing works just fine in the Mournland and Artificer Repair spells are impeded.

I think that "most" of the healing was lay on hands. I really hope all of it was. But another thing that makes no sense is that the Warforged couldnt use his artificer abilities to repair his finger, and stated that within the mournland his ability to heal was impeded. Artificers heal Warforged using repair spells which are not impeded in the Mournland.

The next thing I want to approach I unfortunatly have to place at the feet of the author.

Repetetiveness........

Wow, the entire novel was one big repetition. How many times can the changeling kidnap the girl, get beaten, chased away, slink back and take her again, over and over and over. It was the same situation time and time again with diffrent circumstances.

I also dont like how the short story in Dragon Mag set up this party of adventurers, only to have nearly all of them killed off in the first fourth of the novel. With Keith Bakers short story (Whitehearth) we are introduced to a party of adventures who stick together through the entire length of City of Towers.

The Deathless... WHY, oh WHY, is there a Deathless in the middle of the Mournland? It just makes no sense for one to be there. We are given no explination for why she inhabits her tower. In fact, I think its implied she was there before the Day of Mourning. She's "insane" and lonley and tries to keep everyone there. Why doesnt she just pick up and leave back to the elven homeland.

Of all the characters in the book she should have been able to spot/see/understand the Mark of Death. But that angle wasnt even brought up.

Construct...I'm baffled by the reaction of the warforged at the arena. You've got a city of creatures created for WAR. And they all run away?! Yeash.

I wanna comment again on the healing. There was too much healing in the novel. It takes place in the Mournland and the fact that healing is neigh impossible there is just written around. Its not addressed at all.

Last but not least. The art Department obviously failed to communicate with the novel department. The Cover of City of Towers is at least indicitative of what you might find within, but the cover of Marked for Death is just way off.

The Warforged doesnt join the group till the last few chapters of the book, and he never uses a bow. The Dragonmark is on the girls BACK not Arm/Shoulder. The guy protecting the Elf looks way too young for how he's described in the book.

So anyone else notice these things or more? I'm not nitpicking am I?

I have to agree with you for the most part. The whole changling escape, slink back, strike again, over and over bugged me. I was also confused by the ascendant councilor in the mournland, and the fact that she was portrayed and insane irked me too.

As far as the healing thing, I just assumed that they were using their lay on hands ability (which according to KB works) so I didn't have a huge problem with that. And I just assumed that the warforged was waiting till they rested to fix his finger, I mean he did keep it.

I did like the description of the warforged city, consider that stolen for my home game. I didn't like the way he wrote the WF though. Too much like humans if you ask me. I prefer the way Keith Baker wrote warforged in City of towers.

Overall it just didn't strike me as accurate with the setting, which I was looking for. I had just read City of Tower before this one and CoT really just blew this book out of the water. I've rambled long enough, just my 2cp

I was thinking the same thing, but when I went to WotC boards to discuss this book, I discovered you cannot discuss Eberron Novels on the Eberron boards???

None of the characters are really likable to start with, but just when you start to like one they do something that doesn't make sense and you dislike them more. For example, the Shifter uses Scent to track the Changeling several times, but cannot smell her when they are in the same hold together??

The Knights are so sterotypical they might as well have a sign saying "Paladins" on their shields.

I doubt I will continue reading this series.

I do have to say one thing. Matt's depiction of the nights seems to be right on with my comparison of the Silver Flame and the real world Catholic Church (i'll say no more on this lest i break the rules).

As for reading the rest of the series, well, I love eberron and I've always been intensly intrested in the 13th mark. Just ask Keith, i've bothered him about it a billion times :-p. I can only hope Matt gets more comfortable with Eberron over time and that the next two books are better.

It alluded that the Mark of Death was the most powerfull dragonmark of all.

At one point the Elf who possess it, grew talons from her hands.

Its "implied" that her dreams were killing villagers or creating undead, though we wont know till the 2nd or 3rd book if thats true.

@Dark Psion: I too though it was odd that they don't allow disscussion of Eberron novels on the Eberron boards.

A while back it was OK to discuss novels in the WotC boards, and authors even dropped by to clarify/comment. But some idiotic people started harassing the authors with inane/rude comments. So WotC ended that. The next best thing is the Worlds of DnD message boards, who follow a "book of the month"-style format and discusses the books with different threads for different chapters, so people can avoid spoilers.

Fine boards, those.

This just makes me shake my head. The people who participated in this should be tarred and feathered. Make a list of the people who did this so we can all know who they were. You know, just so those of us who aren't that rude know and can add them to ignore lists.

*sigh*
