Eberron vs Greyhawk

Okay, so Greyhawk isn't dead for those who play RPGA. The REST of us would like a bit more "Non-Living" support, thank you. Otherwise, we leave for other settings.

What exactly are you looking for? Greyhawk is the most generic of campaign settings ever made by TSR or Wiz/bro. You can take basically any module and plug it in with little hassle. That's the beauty.

Eberron is meant to be broader, more of a framework/toolkit approch. They mapped the whole world, but only in terms of basic geography. The details are left to the DM on purpose, not just because they want to sell you more books.

That may have been the original intent, but I suspect Hasbro's shareholders will demand otherwise, especially with WotC's book production being stepped up as it has. With the books coming out as fast as they are, every corner of Eberron is likely to be covered before long, just like FR.

Hasbro shareholders have never heard of Eberron. Hasbro did not buy WotC because of DnD, they bought it because of the Pokemon TCG and Magic. Hasbro likes WotC to be a profit center yes, but from what I know they don't really meddle in the details because they only barely know what WotC does in the first place.

Will they come out with more Eberron books? Yep, you betcha. Will they detail more of the world? Yep. Will they cram it full of their own pet high-level characters and detail it down to the level of Elminsters housemaids pet pomeranian Thangar, destroyer of slippers? No. Keith Baker is fully aware that gamers want wiggle room in their worlds. If they do come out with something you don't like, will large men with clubs come to your house and maim you for not using the new book? Roll initiative baby!

DUNGEON recently put out a poster map of the world, which finally puts that horse to rest now too.
......
Greyhawk is dead and we should all move on. It's just there for name's sake now.

Because of that map I just started a campaign for my wife and daughter. We're using the resources from the company and the fansites to put things together in addition to adding my own stuff. I got a subscription to Dungeon for Christmas so I could get the benefit of the scenarios. It's started off well and looks good for continued gaming; neither of them had gone through most of the old modules. I'm set for a good long run! :)

Greyhawk lives, so long as there are new gamers to bring characters to play there.

Why do some of you have to be SUCH WOTC Fanboys?

I mean seriously, when I hear someone say "Greyhawk is dead" it makes me laugh. Does the life and death of a fantasy setting depend on the latest load of campaign setting fluff that some company like WOTC is putting out every month? Have you all become robotized DM-D&D players that require constantly created and re-hashed material in order to keep gaming?

Go to eBay, pick up the 1983 Greyhawk Boxed Set, or the 1994 From The Ashes, or the new Living Greyhawk Gazateer at your gaming shop. Once you have ANY of those products the world will not die unless your lack of creativity and work allow it to do so. The same goes for any past or present published campaign world.

I do not need the tards at WOTC to keep pushing out material in order to make any of my D&D campaigns go round and round.

That would be a pretty badly run organization. I expect Hasbro is more efficient. And judging from the price and frequency of WotC books lately (not to mention the D&D Miniatures line), this would seem to be true. Someone is determined to get as much money out of WotC as possible. Not that I blame them.

I hope not. I don’t even play Eberron, and already I’m sick to death of hearing about the Lord of Blades. I think the difference is that most of the FR characters came out of Ed Greenwood’s old campaign, while Eberron wasn’t developed so long.

That may be, but I believe he sold all rights to his setting to WotC.

It's not like they have a particularly high release rate of Eberron stuff. The setting is almost a year old, and only two sourcebooks have been released so far, with three more planned for the rest of the year (Explorer's Handbook, Five Nations, and Magic of Eberron - I don't count products that don't really require much in the way of designing, such as the DM screen and character sheets).

Just a point of claification.

The two most often quoted characters for FR are Eliminster and Drizzit, who happen to be good-guy PCs. Detractors from FG say PCs like these either inspire lame copy cat PCs or the GM has these guys swoop in Duex Ex Mecha (sp). At most these guys set PCs on missions.

The Lord of Blades is a NPC villan. GMs are trading idea on how they can use him to ruin the party's day and inspire adventure and what it takes to defeat him. Someone else can set them on the mission.

Two totally different uses from my viewpoint. I perfer the second myself.

It is also worth pointing out that the Lord of Blades stats have a few diffrent offical versions out there. The first one, in Dungeon Mag, had him at a CR 12. Very diffrent form the normal CR 30+ of the FR NPCs.

The Pluses and minuses of each world-

Greyhawk-
+ Original and thus longest running campaign world. LOTS of history and support. DnD's true core world
- Sales wise- the newer worlds always get the support. I remebmer the outcries of FR arriving. Now its Eberron. By 2007 is will be the next world.

Forgotten Realms-
+ High Magic and TONS of material
- High Magic and TONS of material ;)

Darksun-
+ The first truely different spin on DnD that I know of. It was unique
- So unique that was love/hate thus why it is only supported by athas.org

Eberron-
+ The newest and thus different world to play. Unique ideas and history. Purposly trying not to railroad DMs into certain world histories to follow in the future.
- Unique enough to be a love/hate world much like Darksun.

Push comes to shove- it's YOUR WORLD to run. Once you have the basic campaign books you can do whatever you want (at least until the Tattooed man from Strikeforce: Morituri erases your world :D ) Do you NEED someone to tell you how to run your world?
