Whats the right way to calculate the ECL for a race?

The ones i have seen are different fro CR, ..... so how can i know the number?

Guess. There is no exact formula and if you look through different products you will find a range of ecls for similar creatures.

My advice, post it in house rules and ask for people's advice on what the ecl would be. That should give you a few opinions. Good luck.

It's more an art than a science, but you can find guidelines in Savage Species and you can find some here as well.
