I was kind of surprised too when most of the reviews came back positive. The reason there's all this negativity about is because of a relatively small but vocal crowd of fans of the original series who have been damning this since its inception. People who go into it with the notion that they're going to evaluate it on its own merit have generally come away very happy... no, excited about, not only about the mioni-series, but about the prospect of a series to follow. Those who went in expecting it to be the original and had already prejudged it were understandably disappointed.
I loved the original and I've caught the reruns; I think I'm even getting the DVDs for X-mas, yay!; but I recognize that the original Battlestar Galactica had a time and a place. What we have now is something based around similar concepts, but it is not the original show. This is something that is grittier and more realistic than the original. It blows away the standard scifi fare that we've all been getting sick of because its so sugar coated. This is something that doesn't pull its punches and is willing to go into some dark places. It is honestly the series that I've been waiting for them to make. Just as important as the scifi elements is the very human story that it tells. I feel that human drama is soemthing that a lot of scifi chooses to ignore, to its detriment. Since this should go to series after getting the ratings, I'm actually excited about the prospect of TV again.
