D&D General Edition Experience - Updated Survey Results (Updated October 2025)

Curious: how did you referee or adjudicate all the push-pull-slide forced movement effects and terrain location and effects if running totm?

Or did you bust out battlemats for combats only and run it totm the rest of the time?
Same way TotM works in any other edition. Just focus on the statuses those movements force characters into or out of. Able move without provoking OA, not able to move without provoking OA. In Paladin’s aura, not in Paladin’s aura. In the AOE, not in the AOE. Frame things in terms of tradeoffs instead of worrying about precise distances. “You can get in position to flank, but doing so will provoke an opportunity attack unless you Shift first.” That kind of thing

The DM would describe / narrate our characters being pushed-pulled-slid around and we imagined how that appeared. No different than any other movement really.

Is being pushed 10 feet really that more difficult to imagine than walking 10 feet?

That's not the problem we're seeing here. In these surveys, the problem was a handful of edition warriors who got the 4E survey closed after just 54 hours of voting. It was on track to having the most votes ever--it got hundreds of votes in that short time, and most of them were favorable--but alas. Some folks just couldn't let it go.
Maybe try again with it as a [+] thread.

For just my own character, no. As DM or as player trying to mentally map the positions of everyone in the battle relative to each other, very much yes.

The very few times I've ever tried totm gaming it inevitably broke down into arguments over specific positioning.

I think it would be bad form to start a copy of a thread that a moderator has already closed. And I worry that restricting all comments to [+] only could skew the "edition experience" votes.

Buuuut, I'll check with the moderators and see.
Or maybe ask if it's possible to post just the poll by itself, without comments.

I’m not the DM, but we just sort of roll with it. I’m sure we don’t all imagine the same thing, but if anyone needs clarity we just talk about it.
