Edition wars! Games other than D&D

When it comes to Paranoia, I was a 1st Edition junkie. What would be extra fun is when I'd play with a new group of people, and they'd think we're playing 2nd Ed, but I'm using 1st Ed in all it's glory, which just added scads of fun to the already confusing game. Obviously, 5th ed is an UN-PRODUCT, and never actually existed in the first place, because the Computer said so.

So clearly there were some edition wars here.

However, ParanoiaXP has won my heart. It helps that I got to be involved in the design process, which was darn cool. The Toothpaste Disaster warms my heart still for sheer wonderfulness...

My hat of d02 Gamma World know no limit.

I really prefer 1st or 2nd edition GW over the others, like other posters have indicated, and given my choice, I'd play 1st over second. Why? Pure mutant fun. Walking, talking, radation-farting crocdillians with laser beam eyes (was a character of mine). 56 pages of pure fun. In short, it's the complete antithesis of d20. (on the other hand, I enjoy Darwin's World as well, it depends on the mood I am in.)

I do have to admit, I never played the Alternity (5th) edition version of it, but looking over it, I don't think I'd be too keen.

Now you're just baiting the diaglo :D

I'll keep with my "whatever systems is fine, as long as the GM makes it fun for the group" opinion. :)

I have been on the frontlines of the "Classic Traveller is Good, MegaTraveller was better, and it's all downhill from there ESPECIALLY THE HATED AND DESPISED "THE NEW ERROR" edition wars for some time. ;)

My love of Hero 5th edition over 4th is less than total, but I don't play it enough these days to be empassioned for it. (It's also pretty trivial to pull in my major prefered aspect of 4th into 5th... namely, I much prefer that package deals give you points. I guess it's the residual class lover in me.)

Very true. I'm generally for the newer game (D20), but I have years of nostalgia for the 2nd edition (revised and expanded) of D6 Star Wars.

I don't know of anyone who's really a D6 die hard, though...

Those were pretty potent on RPGnet for a while. It was really quite a phenomenon. When the d2o SW game first came out, you could find nothing bile for it from d6 fans; I was about the only one who stood up to it and systematically raised my objections to WEG SW and my preference for d20. Of late, support for d20 SW seems pretty strong and for d6 seems to be erroding.

In another instance of my "D20 trumps dice pools" philosophy, I have also fought a few D20 Rokugan vs. L5R classic wars.

7th Sea is another one. Fans of the "roll & keep" rules are generally put off by AEG's d20 conversion of the game -- Swashbuckling Adventures.

Of course, now the company has dropped both editions, so who exactly do you call the winner in that sad tale?

Naw, I'm just joking around with the guy, and I think (hope) he knows that.

and I'm with your "whatever you have fun with" train of thought.

That's why these debates astound me. I'd play 2e D&D, 5th ed Gamma World, 1st ed Changeling,...whatever. Heck, rules can even not exsist. But they do to state the wargamer urge. ;)

Fourth Edition Gamma World is superior to all other versions-- including first and second, but especially Alternity and d20.

The later editions made the drastic error of ignoring sentient plants and animals. Neither version supported the "wahoo" style of play, which is in my opinion what made Gamma World.

The earlier editions were good, but Fourth Edition simply had better systems.

Some games should never have been made d20-- most notably, Deadlands and Call of Cthulhu. I haven't seen d20 Adventure! yet, but I must confess to some skepticism.

Shadowrun 3rd edition is still an unholy mess, but it's quite a bit better than 2nd edition, which was a major improvement over 1st edition. I'm holding out hope that there will be a 4th edition that is another quantum leap ahead.
