Effect of smoking pot?

Negative effects:
-4 penalty on all concentration checks
-2 penalty on all wisdom checks, wisdom-based skill checks, and will saves
-2 penalty on initiative

Positive effects:
+2 to DC of saves vs. hypnotize, suggestion, slow, phantasmal killer, and similar spells when cast under the influence of dreadweed.
+2 to spot checks against spirits.

that's all I can think of; mix and match, perhaps?

the first thing that comes to my mind is the smell(frequently hideuos) that comes from burning marijuana, i think this would increase the likelihood of wandering monsters...enuf trolls come to see what the stink is about and that may just quash his "habit" :D

Behaviorally, the character acts like Cheech and Chong, Bill and Ted, the guys on "Dark Star", etc. He's also always trying to push it on NPCs or sneak it into their food.

DARK STAR! I thought I was the only one who ever saw that POS. I am all for suspension of disbelief, but a beach ball as an alien!?!?!

Unless he makes his own, which should require a Craft check, he runs the risk of getting some spiked weed. Maybe some dusted with a psycho powder or something, or Black Lotus extract or other poison. The additional drugs could have all kinds of affects, maybe making him rage like a barbarian but attack whatever is closest. A dose of magic augmented speed might give him a heart attack, drop him to deaths door, then permanatlly lower his constitution by 2.

Either he buys it from a potentially unsafe source or he makes his own. Look at Song and Silence under the poison section for a good idea how to set DC's and pricings for drugs. Actually, since drugs are really poisons to the body, you may wanna run them as such, with immediate and secondary temporary ability damage, and permanant if it keeps happening.

I had two of my best friends as well as some of my other friends start over the past few years. One on a every day level. Needless to say they refused to stop and as a result I don't see them much anymore. But here are some observations from and non user observer perspective. As I didn't hang around them when they were high I can't comment on its effects in use but here are some post use effects.

1. One of those friends had been on the distinguished honor roll for all the years I had known him and as his usage picked up his mind began to slip. I once enjoyed having interesting conversations with him and his sharp wit kept everyone laughing. This eventually got to the point where I would make jokes and he would just be like .....whaaa? He had trouble following complicated conversations and needless to say, he has not been on any honor role in about two years.

For a person I have known since I was five, seeing this change in my best friend killed me. I really blame it on inattentive parents as much as anything else.

2. My other friend is only a occasional user and he has not really been effected as far as I can tell. However he was never really the high achiever that #1 was.

3. Another friend that smokes I have only known for the last two years and he has smoked as long as I've known him. I don't know him well so I can't really say much about his intelligence level. However, I have to sadly say I prefer him on pot. He once attempted to quit for about 3 months and during this time he became rather withdrawn and depressed. Normally he is outgoing and "jolly".

For most occasional users it does not seem to be a major impediment outside of the actually use.

Hope that helps.

A preemptive comment: please keep this conversation strictly on game effects. If we get into a conversation about the pros and cons of drug use or a pro- vs. anti-drug discussion, don't be surprised if it gets closed.

Thanks!

I concur. But why ? It is legal to smoke pot in the country I live in.

legality in one country nor another has no bearing in playing D&D. If your country allows you to run around nude with scissors in your hand and say "It's Legal!" that's fine. Just don't post a discussion of legality of one law or another on here, unless it pertains to the rules of the game and how to handle them.

Unless you have a PC that's running around nude with a pair of scissors in his hands and want to share it..now THAT is funny!

Well, speaking as a big-time stoner gamer myself, I'd say penalties on dex and int are appropriate... also on concentration checks.

On the other hand, speaking as a pagan there's a long tradition of seeking enlightenment through drugs (mushrooms, peyote, etc.) so why not go with his prestige class idea? If it isn't unbalancing and doesn't spoil anyone's fun, and if it isn't totally outside the campaign's flavor, it might be worth a look into.
