Effective ways of Fighting Illithids

We had an all-psionics/no-magic game once.

My wife played a charisma-pumped Marshal with an aura out on Will Saves (+5, I think, we had).

I played an anti-psionic monk. Psionic Hole, Closed Mind, Mental Resistance. He did very very well.

EDIT: I should say that the campaign was a war against an Illithid incursion, so, we were almost always fighting Illithid and several times infiltrated bases/cities.

Protection from Evil will help with some of the mind control. Find a way to prevent your thoughts from being read. Dimensional Anchor, or they'll flee when the fight starts going bad for them. Have the ability to attack at range or they'll just levitate out of your reach and blast from safety.

Get undead. And I mean lots of 'em. They're immune to the mind blast and extract.

Bring friends. Lots of friends. Because you can be damn sure the illithids will.

Spell Immunity - Mind Blast

You know I was looking at that combination but it seemed like it would not work as Mind Blast is an area effect, not a targeted spell. Am I incorrect on that?

We are currently looking at getting lots of Mind Blank spells on scrolls. Some Greater Spell Immunity scrolls against Greater Dispel Magic and Dispel Magic. Just because at high level we depend greatly on our magical items.

I was playing in a campaign last year where we went up against Illithids, and was stunned to discover that as a Monk, I did *really well* against them.

A) Good will saves.
B) Stunning Fist => Illithid loses a turn.
C) Rogue within 30 feet with a bow for the sneak attack win.

Consider hiring some to come along.

That is very true. We already had one fight where the Monk player shined. What sucked was when later on we both rolled 1's on our save against the Mind Blast. Bad, Bad, Bad...

So what we are trying to avoid is having to roll at all.

They're 17th level. Discern location-buff-greater teleport ought to be an option.

Apparently the BBEMF is protected from scrying in some way. We have not been able to find him using those methods.

There's nothing in the description that implies that it only protects against targetted spells. It gives infinite SR vs. a list of spells. Don't go flayer hunting without it! (Be able to cast it again in case of dispel magic though.)

I'm sorry you are correct. I was thinking Spell Turning.

So right now we are looking at scrolls with Mind Blank, Greater Spell Immunity [Mind Blast, Dispel Magic, Greater Dispel Magic], Magic Circle vs. Evil. Maybe a wand with Dimensional Anchor, and something to grant us flight... Some scrolls to summon elementals...

Any other ideas.

Shopping time... :D

It's got to be a very good method ...

Discern Location

Level: Clr 8, Knowledge 8, Sor/Wiz 8
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: Unlimited
Target: One creature or object
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

A discern location spell is among the most powerful means of locating creatures or objects. Nothing short of a mind blank spell or the direct intervention of a deity keeps you from learning the exact location of a single individual or object. Discern location circumvents normal means of protection from scrying or location. The spell reveals the name of the creature or object’s location (place, name, business name, building name, or the like), community, county (or similar political division), country, continent, and the plane of existence where the target lies.

To find a creature with the spell, you must have seen the creature or have some item that once belonged to it. To find an object, you must have touched it at least once.

I think it is the last part of the spell that is causing us not to be able to locate him. We have not seen him and we don't have any items that belonged to him.

Besides a Mind Blank prevents it too, which is one of the spells we are looking to use to fight these guys.
