Egarith Monsters

Omertalvendetta

First Post
I have several monster threads around here (really, only two... but that makes me sound good, right?) Anyways, rather than making a new thread everytime I create a new monster, I figured I might as well make a new thread for my "world" and as I create monsters for it, I can upload them to one thread and edit it accordingly with people's suggestions, observations, etc. instead of populating the threads with all kinds of monster junk.

I hope you like what I'll post here... I guess for each monster a little introduction is due, so I shall do my best to provide that. The ultimate goal, however, is for me to balance out the monsters, ensure that they're not OP, and eventually include them in my PDF: Egarith Monster Compendium. I would like to do these steps with the assistance of those that know more than I: all of you guys that read these boards. Your input would be of very great assistance, and any and all suggestions you make to improve a monster, if I adopt it, you will receive due recognition (inclusion of your name, primarily, not monetary compensation cuz me broke!) in the PDF if and when it gets released!

So as to not make my original post too long, I will reply to myself with each monster that I create heretofore to facilitate browsing within the thread!!

Lastly, you can also visit my blog Omerta's Den where I will also upload these monsters and explain a bit more into my world. If I have enough visitors going that way, I won't clog these boards too much with more monsters, just depends on what people are interested in!!

Thorn Hulk

This monster resembles a plant-like troll, if that can be imagined. Hence the regeneration. It is a direct natural descendant to the trolls of Tralveth, their shamans often experimenting within Darkland Grove giving rise to these magical beasts.

It's been playtested, and the changes have been implemented; but please do let me know if anything's odd, or if I need to make any further revisions!!

As for the disease it references, Greenblight; it was borrowed from an idea someone posted herein within these boards, I believe it's in the diseases thread. However, the only aspect that resembles what's illustrated within that thread and this Greenblight is merely the name, all other characteristics of the disease were completely modified.

Soon, I'll do some work in Photoshop to get that disease up here and I'll edit this reply. In the meantime, here's the monster!!

Darkland Treant

This monster was originally published here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/4e-fan-creations-house-rules/274576-darkland-treant.html

Mesh Hong and eriktheguy made some great suggestions within that thread and this has become the final monster version for now unless minor revisions are still suggested. As I mentioned on the aforementioned thread, credit was given to Mesh Hong for the original template, ideas and suggestions that made this monster what it is now. However, feel free to critique it further.

Anyways, here's the new version of the monster... enjoy!

Just looking at the Thorn Hulk:

1: Its HPs are a little higher than I would expect, and regeneration effectively gives it about 30 more.

2: Its Defences are also slightly higher than normal, with its AC 3 higher than I would expect of a level 5 brute.

3: Its damage is actually on the low side, I would expect a level 5 brute to be doing either 2d6+4 or 2d8+4 with its basic attack.

Having said all that I think these three abnormalities actually balance each other out, making this creature a sort of soldier/brute hybrid. If that was your intention then well done.

Yeah, the party is able to hit my creations pretty easy and they tend to bring them down quite fast, so I often have to spice up the monsters with a few soldier properties. I don't do that with all of them, but the Hulk did need some sort of spice in order to stand up against the party. Granted, it was together with a pair of Geonyds and another monster I cannot recall, and this made it a pretty interesting battle. It'd never been a TPK, but it was intended to give them a sweat or two... anyways, thanks for the input!!

On a sidenote, I should be putting up a monster up later this afternoon for mass consideration, so come back and critique if you're around!!

Withering Dryad

I had mentioned about uploading this monster a while back, but I hadn't gotten the chance. Well, here they are. They have currently not been playtested; hence me placing them here to get some input and sanity check. These guys are the second monsters to have the ability to afflict Greenblight, which as promised, I will work on sometime this weekend-upcoming week, and get it to look all nicely to upload here with these monsters so that some of these posts may make sense.

Anyways, originally their aura was an aura 3, but I thought that maybe a little powerful. If any of you think that should be changed back to its original form, I can always modify. Lastly, I realize that weakening players often add that "grind" effect to the players, but my PC's enjoy challenges like this and alternate ways to defeat monsters, rather than the normal hack and slash (or tank and spank)... by all means, however, let me know what you think on them.

Conceptually, they will be the fourth member to be entered into my PDF, as they are the fourth major story component that the players will encounter along Darkland Grove.

Here they are...

Kobold Butcher

This guy was my very first monster creation... the PC's faced him a while back, but unfortunately, due to the nature of the encounter, it wasn't a true playtest. I'm a part of another campaign and I've shown the monster to that DM, who may or may not further playtest him. So, please, put him against a few level 1-3 PCs and tell me how he does; if it works, if he's OP or if he needs to be buffed a little, I must know!!

Yes! More kobolds!!

OmertalVendetta,
Love the treestride ability! I think creatures in general need more abilities that help them when they are encountered with specific allies. Really nicely done!

Btw, Urban Adversaries (24 new monsters for 4e) is now available on rpgnow.com!

Meat Hook: on the Kobold Butcher needs a bit of mechanical work. Immediate Interrupts happen before a shift, so it doesn't actually make sense to pull the target towards the butcher since it is actually still adjacent. Maybe it should just stop the movement, similar to a fighter's Combat Challenge.

Its a bit odd for a non-elite to have an AP. Not really an issue, but I always vote for simplicity in standard monsters.
