Electrum Pieces: Do you still use them?

Currently I use a gold/silver/bronze/copper currency system. With silver the default coin rather than gold. Platinum is only used by the nobility and governments to move large volumes of cash when needed.

In an old 2E campaign I had electrum as the default Elven coin. The Dwarves used mithril coins.

depends on the nation/country.

bronze or lead pieces are the cheapest
then copper
then silver
then electrum
then gold
then platinum
then mithril
then adamantine

usually electrum are worth 1/2 of a gold piece or 10 silver pieces. there are 20 silver pieces to a gold in most cases. 10 copper pieces to a silver. 10 bronze or 10 lead pieces to a copper.

5 gold pieces to a platinum piece. 10 platinum pieces to a mithril. 10 mithril pieces to an adamantine.

most people melt the higher valued coins down for use in armor or weapons. so as coins they are very, very rare.

electrum coins turn up in really old treasure troves. 2 to 5 of the will get you a gold piece (or gp worth of services) depending on where you try to spend them.
I also have Iron Pieces, Brass Pieces and Bronze Pieces that vary in value depending where you try to spend them.

common I'm lazy conversion rates-
500 IP = 200 BP = 100 CP = 40 ZP = 10 SP = 4 EP = 1 GP = 1/10 PP

We still use electrum at the old edition rate (2 ep = 1 gp); we saw no reason to drop the metal, because it was interesting.
I seem to recall that in one campaign the distinction was made between "natural" electrum -- which couldn't be seperated into it's component metals) -- and "smelted" electrum, with natural being that used for the coins ...

But then. we've used everything from slivers of amber, to bars of cold iron, to tears of myrrh, to "gems" distilled from angel's blood -- and more -- so I suppose electrum isn't all that strange ... :)

Hmmm... interesting, as several others, I use electrum and platinum mainly as 'ancient empire' coinage found now and then in ancient hoards and usable as cash for their material prices. Also, I use the silver standard (i.e. most things in the PHB listed as gold are valued at same amount in silver), and I introduced the bronze coin at the lowest rung at 5 bp to the copper. CP exist at 1CP and 1/2 CP values (i.e. a half-copper). 10 cp to the silver, 5 silver to ep, 2 ep to gold, 5 gold to pp.

shoot... i forgot the brass and iron pieces.

used steel pieces too. but that was limited to the Krynn part of my campaign world ;)

I'm surprised persons haven't yet mentioned Jade Pieces, Ivory Pieces, Coral Pieces, and..............Reeses Pieces! As if you didn't see that one coming......

But seriously........

Does anyone use Lankhmarian coinage? Of course, I refer primarily to the Amber Glulditch and the Iron Tik. I woudn't imagine that Bronze Angols or Silver Smerducks would be considered as anything other than bronze and silver pieces, respectively.

I take it that's a no vote on the Tiks/Glulditches? I think I'll use them eventually, just to confuse my players.
