And elves in 4e are a lot less twinky and annoying than in prior incarnations.

I know they won't, though... ENWorld's full of elf-hating racists still nursing a grudge from 2E, even though in 3E elf was one of the weakest races in the game ("Who'd like a con penalty?! What, no takers?"), and in 4E Eladrin are the High Elf descendants, effectively.

Bugbears need more love. They're really, really great.

But the wood elf occupies a deep archetypal niche, and moreover is laden with first-party support both in fluff and crunch.

Elves are the sparklevampires of D&D. Wood elves are just the least offensive of the lot.
