Eliciting campaign help from the great minds of EnWorld.

Howdy,

Here's a little background for my questions:

In my homebrew world I have a sanctified pit fiend (from the sanctifiy the wicked spell). After being released from his "inner contemplation" he has decided to try and atone for thousands of years of evil (a daunting task that will surely fail at some point). After thanking the party for his release, he leaves to set up a power base of his own that will counter what he deems as now evil.

My questions, for any and all of you, is where would a sanctified pit fiend build his base of operations at? What sort of characters/creatures would he attract to him with the leadership feat, that would best serve a LG pit fiend? Flavorwise I've decided that he will not mask his features or polymorph into something more humanoid. He will be constantly hounded by the lower planes, who will not stand for a LG pit fiend running around, so I would think that his choice of associates would need to be able to handle some, if not most of these things. The pit fiend currently has no character class, and there is no time limit as far as how long he would need to build his base of operations (if your idea takes 200+ years that's fine :) ).

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Thanks
H.M.

His headquarters might be remote, or on the fringes of civilization, and perhaps not in the most civilized country/nation of the world. A place where outcasts gather. His followers might be others who, like him, have "seen the light" and are willing to work toward good -- maybe in the shadows, unseen by those they are helping.

I think one of his followers should be a well known Paladin. Someone who truel;y understand what the Pit Fiend is trying to do and will devote himself to helping the Pit Fiend out.

As for his base of operations I'd make it off the beaten path, but still able to get to.

That sounds good to me. You could even go so far as to have the pit fiend take levels in cleric of such and such god of happy goodness, and have him trundle into town COVERED in heraldry of said god, so people will be like "Hey, why is that really big scary spiky thing praying in a temple of Lathander...etc...etc..."

I also think that this guy would catch the eye of the guys up in heaven/celestia/whateverthehellitis, so he may make some allies up there, and perhaps have some cellestial followers. Funny sight: Pit Fiend leading an army of Hound Archons. :D

As for his BoA....how about.....he find a member of the nobility who supports his cause...and helps defend that noble's castle/keep/fortress in return for being able to use it for his base of operations.

Wow, you guys are great!

as for off the beaten path, I have two areas in mind, either in a remote mountain range with no ground accessability, or area of natural geysers (where the water is toxic for humanoids). The only world features not close to current area are desert and tropical. What else might work? (gotta love lots of options :D )

Eric- I like the paladin idea, and plan on using that as his right hand man. I figure only another LG would have the level of dedication the pit fiend would command for his cohorts/henchmen/underlings.

Any additional classes? Maybe a ranger with outsider as his favored enemy? A cleric? Monk? etc........

Thanks for all the responses Angcuru, Crothian, and of course Eric :)

Always Eric getting the speical attention :p

You might have a CG Ranger with favorered Enemy Outsider as the Pit Fiends enemy. THis guy knows the Pits Fiends history and things he should be killed. The Pit Fiend understand where the Ranger is coming from and can't fault him tso the Pit Fiend refuses to kill the Ranger. At first the Pit Fiend is way more powerful then the Ranger, but slowly over time the odds even as the Ranger learns more of the Pit fiend and gains allies.

When placing the Pit Fiend, it's important to think what are the Pit Fiends goals? How is he going to start to attone for his past actions? A common way to attone is to help others, and placing the Pit Fiend in an impossible location for normal people to get to defeats that option.

Very true, but with the pit fiend's flight ability, he won't be limited as far as places go, plus I was thinking a hard to reach place would limit the initial pitchfork and torches uprising for any nearby towns. Most people don't like spot an orc near their village, I assume they'll like seeing a pit fiend even less initially. What are your thoughts?

He's got DR 15/good and silver, immunity to fire, and regernation 5. He has nothing to fear from a mob welding pitchforks and torches. I could see him allowing himself to get stoned for a few hours until people start to lose interest.

I think he would be far enough aeay to not worry the people that he's going to come in a raise their towns, but not so impossible to get to that people can't seek him out. I could see him being a pilgrimage site for people who need to witness his turn around for their own faith.

That's a cool idea, about how long would you surmise this would take (people realizing he's not going to eat them on sight)? a generation? less? more? Maybe real quick if it's a small hamlet and the pit fiend continously saves it from disaster?

Thanks Crothian. :)

How about you have the pit fiend speak Lawful Good?

Ex. What ho, good sir night!
And the day is mine!
Mine keen eyes doth spot a damsel in distress, AWAY!
On my honor!
Give me a quest!
For the king! (well, maybe not this one)
