It depends on how active he's going to be in saving other people. Now, any Paladin will know if he's not evil as will most clerics and other good creatures thathave access to that spell. Assuming there's a fair number of people/creatures with that ability around; he could be trusted very fast.

"I heard there's a Pit Fiend living up that path, we should band together and chase him out."

"It's true that he lives up there, but even the Unicorns protect himand say he is okay. And I'm not going to cross the Unicorns."

"Give me a quest" logic actually seems pretty good. I don't know if you are familiar with the labors of Hercules, but having him pledged to do mighty deeds of good as part of his atonement could be very interesting. Think slaying the Hydra, or diverting the course of a river...
