Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in Avengers 2

On a side note, I could not quote with explorer and had to switch to chrome.

No, because Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were long-time Avengers themselves. They probably have more page-time in Avengers than they do in X-Men, honestly.
And that would be unrelated to whether the X-Men are being added to the continuity or not. Along with the characters, you get their backgrounds added to the story line. It could be that they are being added without any background that included the mutant phenomenon or the X-Men existing in that background. However, I find this unlikely.

You are saying that in an action flick it is unlikely that characters appear without any background?

Yes, that is exactly what I said. :p

Because of the rights issue involved, I'd think that is the most likely occurrence.
I guess they could leave it unexplained or even change the story line, but if they have the right to those characters, they should have the rights to include at least the back story as Fox has the rights to nearly all the mutants.

Screwed up people? Because their father is Magneto? Or because they were raised by a sapient cow that was messed up by the High Evolutionary?

So long as the story is decent, and the director does an decent job, I'll be satisfied. It would be nice if they stuck to some aspect of the character history and were in some way respectful of it, but that doesn't seem likely anymore.

It has everything to do with it, because the issue at hand isn't background, but *licensing*.

Sony has the licenses to make movies about Spider-Man and Ghost Rider, and all related villains and characters.
Fox has the movie licenses for X-Men, Daredevil, and the Fantastic Four and all the stuff commonly associated with them - including the villains, like Magneto.
Marvel has the licenses for everything else.

But, there are some characters "related" to more than one license, that cross over - like Scarlet Witch, who was an Avenger herself. These characters can be used by either Marvel or Fox, but there are limits to what each can say. Magneto and the whole "mutant" shtick sits with the X-men. So, those things cannot be mentioned in Avengers 2 unless Fox explicitly okays it. Similarly, Fox could use Quicksilver, in an X-movie, but then cannot mention the Avengers in *his* background.

Since the world is not abuzz with how they've made a crossover deal, you aren't seeing X-Men in the Avengers continuity. You can expect either the origins of those characters will be rewritten, left out, or only vaguely alluded to in ways that won't break the license.

How are the writers going to show Scarlet Witch's powers? Did the comics ever really get her hex (bad luck for you) power to work in a non-hokey way? What I remember most about Wanda in the Avengers comics, she was more a problem for the team than for their enemies.
