elves:flawed logic

Am I the only one who thinks it strange that there are elvish hounds as opposed to elvish cats.
I mean think about it. What are dogs known for (ideally)? Loyalty=Lawful,right? Now what are cats known for? Free-spiritedness=chaotic, right? Now what are elves known for? free-spiritedness,right? So it seems to me that elves would empathize more with cats than dogs.Also, I've never read anything about elves using tree surgery.
just a thought :) ,

You make an excellent point. Although elves tend to be associated with Cooshee and Blink Dogs more than regular dogs. This does remind me of an old elf character of mine who would occasionally explain elven culture to his party using descriptions that could easily apply to cats, such as "We're fastidiously clean."

I think that elven dogs and cats are both from mythology/folklore.

In previous editions of the game both elven dogs (cooshee, I guess from "cu sidhe") and cats exist. Perhaps 3E has some stats for both?

Tree surgery?

Folklore has both, actually. Cu Sith and Cait Sith.

But, I think the thing is, the Cu Sith was fairly distinctive, being a big shaggy green dog, while a Cait Sith is basically just a cat. The former makes for a more interesting monster.

Accordingly to my 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual, an elven cat is an intelligent creature; they have their own language and can even speak the elven tongue. They are even more stealthy and perceptive than common cats, have limited ESP and are able to use enlarge and trip once per day and tree and reduce twice.

Before someone else does that, I'll note that second edition elves were so broken that even their cats were challenging enemies.

Cheers,

I now have a strange compulsion to create a scenario featuring the nefarious Dark Lord of the Cait Sith, Darth Mew.

And his bumbling apprentice, Darth Rover.

Cheers,

In second edition regular cats were challenging opponents. 75% hide in shadows. 1D3 damage per claw and a potential claw/claw/bite/rake attack routine.

Two things:

1) It isn't like every single elf in existence is chaotic. The race alignment is a trend, not a binding universal. Some elves can be dog lovers.

2) Who you empathize with and who you want to stay in your house every day are not necessarily the same.

And if anyone's interested, there's a link to my unpublished (as in, rejected) "Ecology of the Elven Cat" in my sig below.

Naw, man. You've got the wrong axis.

Dogs = Good
Cats = Evil
