Embarassment of Riches at the Game Store!

Yikes! I just got home from visiting Games Plus to pick up the Epic Level Handbook. Well, not only was that there, but Striptease (the new PvP colelction) was there; and due to a lack of funds, I had to leave behind the Grimoire Arcane, the Grimoire Divine, the Liber Beastiarius, Hammer & Helm, and Necromancer's G3, Hall of the Rainbow Mage (the module that just got nominated for the ENies). And that's just the stuff that caught MY eye; there were other cool items there too that I didn't even consider buying for myself.

This d20 stuff is going to break me financially. Keep bringin' it on!

Print collection of a funny web comic by a guy named Scott Kurtz.

'Bout friggin' time. I was beginning to think that book would never hit the shelves. Now if Gabe and Tycho would just put out another Penny Arcade strip collection...

Liber Beastiarius

Warning!! Do not leave the Liber behind! It has been known to follow those who shun it home, slaughter their pets, eat their families, consume their souls, and parade around at school/work inhabiting the bodies of those who disregarded it!

Worse, as a demonic doppleganger of you, it does poorly on tests and pretends to like country music in front of your friends! Not only will your soul be eaten and your body inhabited by a demonic monstrosity, but people will think you're a freak!

Check it out. Buy it, love it, give it a good home. It will reward you well.

Oh yeah, and talk about it here so I know what people think.

Not to brownnose, but this was the hardest one to leave behind, and I will get it with my next paycheck for certain ($27!). Many well-thought-out and interesting monsters (I got several campaign ideas just looking at the lizard quadriped, just for one example), and a few things that made me chuckle (in a good way). Frankly, I hadn't kept up with any pre-release buzz about it, and I was pleased to run across it. I just hope there are copies left when I can get back, but I gotta pay the rent first, dagnabbit...

And sorry for not being more precise about Striptease. I read PvP every day, and I didn't think there were people on these boards that didn't know about this most excellent comic. :) Run, don't walk to http://www.pvponline.com to see what you've been missing.

Matt's right. I saw the Liber at Origins, and I found myself repeatedly drifting back to Eden Studios' booth over the course of the weekend to flip through the book. Since it obviously held an unholy control over my mind, and since I subscribe to the theory that it's impossible to have too many monster books, I finally picked it up.

It's good stuff. The monsters aren't too over-the-top goofy to use, the art's not bad, and a lot of the creatures tie into each other, giving some continuity to the whole shebang. Mind you, I haven't totally finished the book yet (I spent far too much at Origins...), but I like what I see.

One minor thing I didn't care for was that the CR's of the creatures are purposely set a little low in order to make the creatures more badass. This is easily tweaked, of course - Matt says in the foreword that you can just up the CR by one if you don't want the carnage level too high. A minor thing, but it still made me furrow my brow and say "huh..." as I read it back in the hotel room.

Overall, it's $27 well spent. Especially if that part about consuming your soul is true...
