Please vote in the Lady Kelvin poll I posted. I'm having real trouble with hammering out who she is. Also, please check out the history thread if you haven't had a chance.

BTW, perhaps we need to decide certain things about the city. The treatment of Monstrous characters (eg: Gobs and such) and the issue of slavery.

Heraldry can also go here actually.

From my post of the goblin tribes in the Guard thread (how the city guard views goblins and such in town):

Mor’s End itself has a sizable goblin population made up mostly of outcast and orphans, who have decided city life is much easier than living in the swamps, they primarily live outside the walls in the squats and are generally frowned upon by the city, no goblin is ever fully trusted but many of these goblins perform the task that the other races in Mor’s End would find demeaning or disgusting. Goblins that enter the city walls are always marked and watched to make sure they are not raiders and most local goblins are known to the city guard and watch; strange or unknown goblins found wandering the streets are normally picked up, questioned and removed from the city proper. It seems that most of the local goblins don’t mind this treatment and many see it as a sort of game. The occasional Hobgoblin shows up in Mor’s End too, most are refugees from battles or those orphaned and left to at the city gates.

What sort of nobility have we got in Mor's End? It seems most are just rich merchants with slight pretensions towards nobility. Unfair? I think we need to hash out the history of aristocracy a lot better. What other houses are there besides Palmora? How many have country estates? How long have they been in Mor's End?

You've got it just about right. The nobility comes from a couple of different groups.

*The original argali nomads eventually became landed gentry... and some fancy themselves "noble".

*Others are merchant families that have been in Mor's End for a long time. There are also a few guildmasters here and there that have made the "leap" to nobility.

*Some nobles from other lands have decided for whatever reason to make Mor's End their home.

The above is also the pecking order of the "nobility"... at least as I see it.

Would the nobles be mostly human? It seems like the longer lived races would have a different social organization. After all, they've only been in Mor's End for "a few generations"!

cough gone
computer up
job done

will spend the next hour reading posts and catch up to where everyone is.
then will determine next govt steps. want to make sure that it hasn't already been covered in other areas by other people.

I think most of the "nobles" will be human and dwarven. These were the two races that established Mor's End, and I think they would be the most prominent in the noble class.

Other races will fall into the category of rich merchants/guildmasters and foreign nobles.

The City Council will most likely have a faction of nobles on it. I wonder, though, how the council chooses its members. Is it hereditary? Hmmm...

How about this...

Half the council is hereditary... these are the "noble" houses. The names of these houses relate to the local argali nomad clans.

The other half of the council is a representative from each major guild. These would be selected by the guilds.

There might be tension between the "nobles" and the guilds. There might also be tension between some of the rich families that think they are "nobles" and want a bigger say in the running of the city.

Wouldn't the dwarves stick to their clan structure? They've barely been in Mor's End for 3-4 (dwarven!) generations or so, so I don't think they would have changed their social structure in that amount of time.

Not knowing how many council members people were thinking of I took a stab at the chart below.
Help me fill in the blanks if you can. I can edit anything you want and drop in names as needed.

Hi wizo'plains... good to have you back. :)

Just so you know. The Workers Senate got voted off the island.

Good point...

I think I like wizo'plains use of a dwarven ex-pat on the City Council. Perhaps the dwarves also have a member on the council. This might cause tensions with the dwarven ex-pat.
