He was always trying to create new machines to take the place of manual labor, unfortunately one day while he was working on an experiment a great explosion rocked his laboratory, killing him. This left only Falrinn’s mother to raise him. She was an overbearing mother and very over protective of her only child. He gave into her every whim, as he grew up, especially her stern refusal to allow him to be involved with anything mechanical or alchemical. She deemed these activities “too dangerous” to be tinkering with and Falrinn was all too happy to appease his mother. As he grew he rarely left the house or her side, leaving him somewhat socially inept. One might say that Falrinn was a mama’s boy. (Because of Falrinn’s upbringing he suffers a –1 to all social skills and does not receive a +2 to Alchemy checks)</p><p></p><p>THE PAST</p><p></p><p> As Falrinn neared adulthood his mother sent him to the market to pick up some supplies (it was one of the rare times that she sent him somewhere by himself). On his way he met a halfling on the road, who was travelling the same way as him. They walked and talked and the man told Falrinn that he had a rare item that he was looking to sell and that he seemed like a nice enough gnome so he was offering it to him. The halfling showed Falrinn a large crimson feather, he said that it was a griffon tail feather. He explained that he was in need on some quick coin and he was offering the feather at a fraction of its true worth. The halfling assured Falrinn that he could easily sell the feather to a wizard for at least 3-4 times what he was willing to give it to Falrinn for. Convinced, Falrinn agreed to the man’s deal and ran home to tell his mother.</p><p> He excitedly told his mother of the great thing that he had just done and gave her the feather. She calmly listened to his tale, but she finally exploded into a fury. The feather was nothing more than a large chicken feather and he had spent two weeks worth of supplies on it. She berated Falrinn for hours. She said “ What should have I expected? Your father was a fool and obviously the apple does not far fall from the tree. Falrinn, a fool and his money are soon parted! Is that what you want people to think of you, a fool?” For as long as she lived she never let him forget about that day. It was drilled into his head that the worst thing that could ever happen was to be made to look like a fool.</p><p> Not being allowed to participate in alchemy or mechanical matters left Falrinn with few things to do. One day though, he found his calling card in life, gemcutting. It was an activity that his mother approved of as it kept him under her close a careful eye and it was safe. In fact, she turned his father’s old laboratory into a small work room for him. As the years passed, so did his skill and renown for his craft. He happily lived with his mother, abiding by her will, as he teased out the true beauty of every gem. People came from far and wide, courting him to work for them in far-away cities, but he refused to leave his mother. (Actually she guilted him into staying with her.)</p><p> One day however, Falrinn’s mother fell ill. He cared for her, but sadly she died. After grieving for his dear mother was contacted by the Glittering Brotherhood, of Mor’s End, to be one of their master gemcutters. He agreed and sadly moved to Mor’s End to begin his mew life without his mother.</p><p></p><p>CURRENTLY</p><p></p><p> The Glittering Brotherhood has had their eye on Falrinn for along time. They have tried to get him to come to Mor’s End for many years, but he refused to leave his mother. When she died they saw it as their opportunity to begin to cut into the Mechant’s Guild power in the city. They are very excited about this acquisition. Falrinn has been working for them for only a few months and his skill and talent has exceeded their hopes. He has already begun to bring in good amounts of money to the guild. It is beginning to work out just as they had planned.</p><p> The Merchant’s Guild has indeed noticed the effect that Falrinn has had in the short time that he has been there. Fortunately for them though, Falrinn’s social ineptness is in full swing here in Mor’s End. He lives alone, without his mother to tell him what to do. Although he will not admit it he is alone and scared in this city. He has no friends, his only true friend was his mother. He is concerned of course, about looking like a fool in this new city. </p><p>The Merchant’s Guild has sent out of its agents to reach out to him the in New Moon Inn, an inn that he likes to frequent, to gather some information on him. To their great surprise, one of their agents, an older woman much who looked very much like Falrinn’s mother was able to uncover pretty much the whole story of his life in a few nights. He treated her just like his mother and he told them everything. He told her of his hopes, dreams, and most of all his fears. He confided in her without much thought. Talking to her made him feel at home once again.</p><p>This information has been passed up to the leaders of the guild and a wicked idea came to one of them. He liked to call the idea “Finders keepers, losers weepers”. They thought that if they can convince Falrinn that the Glittering Brotherhood is making a fool out of him that they can steal him from them. The Merchant’s Guild must convince Falrinn that they Brotherhood is laughing at him behind their backs. They want to plant the idea that the Glittering Brotherhood is playing him for a fool and they are not paying him 1/10 of what he is worth. After all a fool and his money are soon parted. Then the Merchants Guild is planning on recruiting Falrinn by offering him a great amount of money. Perhaps even having his new friend at the New Moon helping him though this difficult time telling him what he should do. They are doing all of this in hopes that they can end the monopoly that the Glittering Brotherhood holds on the magical gems in Mor’s End, starting the downfall of the their bitter rival.</p><p></p><p>PC HOOKS</p><p></p><p>1. The Merchant’s Guild asks the PCs to enter the heavily guarded Glittering Brotherhood compound to leave a letter in Falrinn’s workshop area where he would easily find it. The letter has been forged and it from one high ranking Brotherhood member to another, detailing how much a fool that they think Falrinn is. They would have been willing to pay him five times what they initially offered, but he accepted the first low-ball offer that they made.</p><p>2. The Merchant’s Guild has resorted to threatening Falrinn into joining them. Their other efforts ahs failed. The Glittering Brotherhood has hired the PCs to protect Falrinn and to teach a message to any Merchant Guild thugs who try to mess with Falrinn.</p></blockquote><p></p>
