I actually never fleshed that out, it coould work either way. The Imp exerts a level of control that most familiars would not have, but that's part of the character, that's also one reason I tried to keep his level low. This is one of those wierd little guys who everybody thinks is a little quiet but generally don't even notice. I could see an adventure involving these characters getting into a more adult storyline (I hate to use the term vile as that's just silly). I didn't want to write him as a serial killer with a "the devil made me do it mentality" but I wanted it to be open ended enough so DMs could adjust the character to fit their style. If you want Psycho then the Imp is in control, if you want something more mainstream then the Imp is just a familiar of a evil man.
