EN World Dungeon

Breakstone

First Post
Call me crazy, but I've got an idea:

My next campaign will, most likely, feature a huge, recently discovered dungeon inside a large mountain next to a small mining town.

With the prospect of monsters to kill, treasure to discover, and adventure to be had, hundreds of adventurers soon flock to this town and this dungeon.

The dungeon, basically, would be a background to the rivalries and politics of these adventuring groups and the rapidly growing town.

But y'know what? I just can't design a dungeon that big, all by myself.

So that's why I come to you, EN World, to build the biggest, baddest, and brainiest dungeon ever to be witnessed in these forums!

Or, at the very least, we could have some fun and share some good ideas.

So here's what I was thinking: Everyone who wishes to participate could post a room, a group of rooms, or even a huge section of this dungeon. No map is needed (not all of us are artists here), but you should describe the general layout of the dungeon, the inhabitants of the dungeon, and the ecology of the dungeon.

I'll start it off:

Ancient Obstacle Course

This group of rooms used to be the obstacle course of an ancient army. It's filled with non-fatal traps and physical challenges. Currently, however, it's inhabitted by a large family of intelligent giant spiders and their kobold slaves.

This dungeon starts out with a 20 ft. by 20 ft. stone room with three open corridors leading from it. One of these is the entrance to this room from further dungeons. The other twocontain different challenges, but eventually lead to the same room at the end. A large map of this dungeon has been carved into the wall, but sections have been eroded by time and the spiders who live here.

The first corridor leads to a 20 ft. by 40 ft. room. The middle 30 feet of the room consist of a 20 foot pit, now filled with thick spider webs. There is, however, a 6 inch-wide-beam from one side of the pit to the other. The intelligent spiders usually ambush prey on one side, forcing them to attempt to cross the pit. Falling into the pit is like falling into a web spell.

The second corridor leads to another hallway. When a certain tile is stepped upon, dense stone balls are shot out of the further wall through a pneumatic system. The characters must get across the corridor and to the lever on the other side in order to shut down the challenge.

After these two challenges, both corridors lead to another large room that used to house dummies used for target practice, which were long ago ripped apart for nest materials by the spiders. This room is now used as the nest for the intelligent giant spiders, and is fiercely protected. Chains hanging from the ceiling provide hooks to hang web-wrapped prey. A cage in the corner houses the kobold slaves.

The only other life in this dungeon is the strange illuminescent purple mushrooms that the spiders harvest to feed to their kobold slaves.

First this should probably be in Plots and Places

Second This sounds interesting and I might throw in some ideas but first is this a single dungeon complex or alot of seperate dungeons and what was the original purpose of the complex(es)

I suppose it could be a long abandoned city like that of the Anasazi(sp)

Actually, it might make a neato EN World PDF.

Two categories: Rooms and Staircases.

Each room must have one door in and one out (though they can have more). All rooms and staircases are numbered. All doors must be of standard size though there can be double doors (with each door leading to a seperate room) All rooms and staircases must have rules for being CR 5, 10, and 15.

Presto! Instant dungeon.

The DM can pick randomly (we'll provide a table) and run the dungeon from there.

No, it won't be coherent. But it will have the advantage that even if the players read the book, they won't be able to prepare for the next room.

Kind of like the Fightng Fantasy/Lone Wolf books, only with a group in mind.

Okay, you're crazy!

hehe interesting though... Will it be part of Mor's End?

Finally! I've been waiting all day for someone to say that! :D

What exactly is Mor's End?

Hey, this is a really good idea!

This is Mors End - its the ENWORLD CITY PROJECT - similar to this Dungeon idea but with a collaborative Citystate being set up instead. Plots & Places has a plethora of threads tagged either ENWORLD CITY or MORS END relating to it (its lost momentum lately though)

Infact Mors End has a mysterious set of 'catacombs' beneath it which could well be a part of this mega dungeon idea...
