Since I know how this conversation will go -- "You turned something off but you added Petz!", I'll post the same reply I did in the email you sent to me on this subject:

There's no Petz information displayed on regular forum pages, so no. The only place Petz calls on the database is on Petz-specific pages, which all have a lesser number of queries on them than any given forum page. Thus, it is better for the server if someone is looking at a Petz page rather than a thread or anywhere else on the boards.

Same principle applies to the subscription emails. Various things have been turned off to reduce server load due to severe slowdowns; Petz does not increase server load.

If you have a better solution to the current server load problems, Mark, I am happy to hear it.

Nope. Not my field. I'm just glad that the boards will no longer be slow.

I expect they'll still be slow, but not as slow as they would be with all that stuff turned on. It's "damage control" rather than a solution, unfortunately.

The actual solution is to get a new server, but that's dragging on. I'm hoping fervently it happens very soon.

Morrus, sorry for the OT hijack but I'd like to express appreciation for what you're doing to maintain the site. I'm not familiar with the site's problems but it appears to be an increasingly frustrating job for all the admins involved. I'm sure very few people, myself included, can appreciate it.

Unfortunately I think some people got a mistaken impression that the fund raiser last year should have solved all EN World's problems permanently.

You might want to include the thread starter in such an apology next time. ;)

I have some familiarity with this, since I use the same webhost, and have a great deal of appreciation for it myself.

Do you have anyone in particular in mind? :p

Oh, sorry Mark, most definitely not anyone in this thread. :)

I've seen a few posters in other threads get over frustrated about recent board problems.

:p Are you sure? I might be part of a secret cabal of anti-EN Worlders! :D

And, just to be clear, the primary reason for my posting about this issue was to make sure everyone was aware that the feature wasn't accidently switched off, as has happened with some other features recently, and make sure the reasoning was clearly and easily accessed. I figured if I started a thread (with a clear subject line) we could avoid it being brought up a bunch of other times, randomly, throughout a bunch of other threads where the problem, solution, and any discussion often gets lost amid the discussion of other issues. It had already been brought up in the B-day thread and I wanted a thread to which I could point folks with an explanation where they wouldn't have to wade through dozens of posts to find the answer.

Anyway, that being done, I suppose this thread can be closed my muddying the waters further. :)
