Where was the option for "Abby-Normal"? Oh, and do imaginary psychiatrists count?

No, I do not consider myself a "normal" gamer. The last time I ran a face-to face game was 1994. The last time I was a player in a D&D game was in the late 80s. Since 1995, it's been play-by-post and chat-based games for me.

And then there is the matter of my obsession with hags and my propensity to add water to everything...

I love the strong, even-handed moderation here on ENW.
IME, this happens because the Enworld mods are much stricter than others I have experienced.

I'm not sure it has to do with moderation so much. I mean, tons of people practically start crying over any little thing written here; then the mods get involved. Half of the people can't even tell when others are joking/ribbing or actually flaming. And the whole, "intent is hard to read" excuse doesn't fly with me. Other people don't have that problem on (non D&D) forums. I can't fully blame the mods for the sensitivity issues around here.

On ENW we can talk about rpgs and rpging, and that's really the point, right?

I find myself visiting the site simply for the information; not really to "hang out" and see what "friends" are saying. Being here for so long, that's kind of disheartening to think about. I've been a regular on other non D&D forums for much shorter periods of time and made many friends.

Then again, what should I expect? I can't really play D&D with most people here and I haven't been to a Con. So why would I converse with anyone outside of the forum. I at least played online games (not D&D) with other members of other forums which helped establish that friendship.

Now I'm curious to know how many people have established friendships here (other than people meeting up with Morrus at a Con).

Consider yourself to be one of the guys whenever you tiptoe!

Ok, so then we need to figure out if we're normal gamers in general & if EN World gamers are different than the general gamers. :p

There are posters here I like (as posters) and respect (as posters), but I don't expect to make friends via a bulletin board. The idea seems odd to me (which is arguably weird in itself, seeing as I'm married 14 years to someone I met on a Usenet message board...)

Worrying about what the "normal" is, and how far you are from it, seems to me to be measuring for the sake of measuring. What's the point? We're all fringe-hobbyists, however you slice it.

The real question, that may have some practical value, is "How far from the normal can you be and still have a good time playing with more average gamers?"

I think the answer is, "pretty darned far."

I agree.

At my table I am not typical. For most of the people I play with it is a one night a week thing that we do and they do not spend a lot of time thinking about it after.

I have always spent alot of my spare time reading, talking or playing RPGs. I buy games I know I will never play (and sometime don't want to). I just want to take a good look at the character generations system, the combat system and the world (and yes ...... in that order).

I love to role play and am more than happy to enjoy an entire night where very few dice are actually rolled, but that being said I truely do not understand how anyone can put together a character that is less than efficient. I like crunchy bits and I can be a bit of a min/maxer. Over the years I have learned to bite my tongue (my wife is also a gamer and plays an entirely different style and I would dearly love to spend another 22 years married to her).

Back when I was healthy I definitely stood out among gamers. Having 23 inch arms and a 55 inch chest of muscle definitely was not the norm. Now I have the more "normal" gut and "nerdy" look, so fit in much more.

I don't enjoy many of the things (WoW being the easiest example) that most of the people I game with do, so I tend to assume my tastes aren't the norm.
