Encouraging folks to do more reviews

Hmmm, mostly I have reviewed items that I found useful in my games. If I don't use/like it I generally don't make the effort. As a result my reviews tend to be favorable.

On the other hand I don't think that I have ever not reviewed a product that I have gotten a comp of, but I also make sure that it is mentioned in the review, just in case it has biased me in favor of the product. (I don't think that it ever has, but...)

I don't like the new EN World reviews section. All the product covers are gone now. It just isn't the same.

I do wish people would do more reviews though. Perhaps a shorter Comments section would be good. Kinda like at Amazon.com or Netflix. Just a paragraph or two would suffice and people wouldn't feel so much burden.

I think there is a written and numerical difference in the review --- that is, reading your review gives me the idea of a 2.5 to 3.5 rating rather than your stated value of 4.5. I don't give much weight to the numbers preferring the actual written review (incidentially, I have had this problem pointed out in my own reviews so maybe I am just projecting ).

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look back through the review and maybe edit it a bit. I liked the product but I do tend to be a bit critical. I'll try to focus a bit more on the possitive in the future.

A little shameless plug:

As I meantioned earlier, this thread has lit a fire under me, and encouraged me to write reviews myself. I've used reviews for years now to help me pick the products that I buy, and because of them I have picked up a lot of great products that I might have otherwise missed, but it never occured to me how much some writers may look forward to reviews as well. So last night I sat down and wrote my first review and posted it here a few minutes ago.

I chose to review my most recent purchase because it was fresh on my mind, but I will be doing more as time allows. If anyone is interested, and sees my review, please let me know what you think of the format I used, and let me know if I missed anything.
Glad to see another reviewer join us. Its a useful review as it covers everything. Personally I do try hard to avoid missing things though it can be harder on some of the longer books, like the Conan RPG. Personally I do use a pretty standard format for reviews as it seems easier to write them and read them that way.

Wrote a few reviews, enjoyed the experience, but was disappointed that it only felt like a few people actually got enough out of them to comment.

I wouldn't mind one of those "did you find this review helpful" links that I see on book and movie review sites.

Reviews now only have to have 500 words and it is not hard to write that much even on the smallest of products like the pair of 4 page PDFs I did this weekend. While we encourage people to write reviews we still want to be able to have some standards as to the length and quality of the reviews. Making them like Amazon will sacrifice that and that is not an option.

I think what Ed meant was having the normal review section, then having a comment section for each product, where people could give brief opinions.

Then again, you can comment on any review you want. I've seen people use those to mention things they liked or didn't like.

I'd like that as a lot of reviews its hard to know how much use people have had out of them.
