Encumberance... In or Out?

Everybody's talking about "bean counting" and "inventory management", but encumbrance isn't just for how many pounds of salt you can carry!

Trying to drag an injured companion out of the fight? Encumbrance.
Trying to carry a magical statue out of a collapsing temple? Encumbrance.
Trying to grab as much of the dragon's hoard as you can before it comes back? Encumbrance.

Encumbrance - it's not just for boring stuff (TM).

These are the categories of things I like having encumbrance for. We usually have a rough idea of the weight each character is carrying. We just don't turn it into an exercise in bean counting.

...so why do we need to track the poundage of our equipment if all we're using it for is to see if we can heft the big stuff?

What does Encumbrance measure that "Make a Strength check" doesn't?

I've always liked Encumberence. It adds a nose dose of down to Earthness to the games that the game really does need. You can't build castles in the sky without your feet on the ground. Also, you can't carry everything and the kitchen sink with you at all times.

Plus, I always get kicks out of watching my players huddle together and try to formulate some new plan to thwart encumberance, such as charming an enemy then polymorphing it into a pack animal after they scare the actual donkey away. DMs who hand out bags of holding all the time just aren't doing it right. I say a DM isn't doing their job properly unless the players have to use their brains.

I disagree. I like my castles particularly high. Fly spells for everyone involved!

It helps define character. My current PC is a small humanoid raven with a Strength of 6. He has other PCs character the alchemist's fire he needs for his spells 'cause it weighs a pound each! (He keeps two on himself for casting, but his stockpile? That's on the Ogre Mage.)

So a Raven and a Ogre Mage walk into a Tavern...

I forget the punchline.

All of which could be easily handled by skills or ability checks.

we never used Encumberence mainly only for the stuff you had in your backpack not for your gear and weapons.

reading a bit trough it i remember why, the fact that a cleric would need strength 14 when wearing a full plate and carrying a mace. and only wanting to carry a light load
( this being naked under the plate priests vestments are another 6lb)

a royal son str 8 is going on a field trip
royal's outfit (15lbs)
longsword at his side (4lb)
backpack (2lb)
rations for 1 day (1lb)
2 sun rods (2lb)
water skin (4lb
-----------------------------
28lb total
giving him a medium load and thus movement reduction

in 3.5 you could derive at the weight of coins trough the bless water spell

it needs 5lb of silver which costs 25 GP
so 5lb of silver is 250 silver pieces
so 50 silver pieces weigh 1lb

and lets assume a GP weighs the same as a sp
lets say the fighter would like to buy a sword +5 costing 50000 GP
the gold pieces would weigh 1000lb and he has strength 18
light load <100 10 round trips between the gold stash and the store
medium 101/200 5 trips
heavy 201/300 3 and a bit

now i remember why we turned the 100 GP identify pearl a standard currency.
