D&D 5E End-game gimmicks: the problem with 5e meta-plots

The big "problem" is adding in more PC just blows the balance up. One more set of attacks changes everything so if they assumed 4 PC in the group bumping it up to 6, even 4-5 levels below where they expected you to be in that encounter makes a huge difference.

6 pcs makes me think he needs to double the number of legendary actions!

Very true. I think the DMG should offer advice on modifying legendary monsters for larger parties. A legendary is somewhat of a "solo" so it needs to be adjusted for larger groups.

I think those mechanisms should have been right in the Monster Manual.

Like a Beholder getting to shoot one ray after each hero turn. With 4 heroes, that's four bonus rays. With 7 heroes, it's seven.

Simple and elegant built-in scaling.

Not a bad idea. If I ever run 5e again I'll use that .
