Enhancing Spell Casting With SpellCraft

If my wife and I go to dinner together, we both have the exact same options available to us. We are both ordering from the same menu, after all. So then, we are going to end with the same orders? ;)

Now let's say everyone always goes to that same restaurant. Sure, a lot of people will eat different things, but after a little while the sameness of the atmosphere and food will give way to blandness.

But as for the original idea, I think more spellcraft work should pay off in cool ways. I love the idea of calling spells and calling diagrams, and I think you should be able to do more with them, such as how clerics can hallow locations, etc.

How about illusion circles? Specially created places that make illusions more realistic or longer lasting?

Or specially prepared areas that when you create walls of force/iron/etc you can designate certain people can get through them, or it requires a password

But "after a little while" is awfully vague. It also depends on the size of the menu. There are quite a few metamagic feats and a few hundred spells. That's a lot of different combinations. It would certainly present more variety than I've seen so far playing d20 in my neck of the woods, where not a single PC has ever used a metamagic feat in any game I've played in over the past few years.

Now, admittedly, my experience doesn't constitute research or anything like that, but it does seem to me that it indicates there is possibly a problem with the metamagic feat system as it stands. An option that no one uses (IME) doesn't seem to be much of an option.

Certainly my off-the-cuff thoughts about using Spellcraft to fix this problem might not be the best solution, but it is a possibility.

I've also considering giving spellcasters X number of "metamagic feat points" per day that can be spent on augmenting spells when they are cast.
