My thanks for everyone's input, but my main concern was figuring out the value of a gem that has increased in mass by 50%. I already have a pretty solid plot thread handling this wiseguy's scam--let him scam for a while, get comfortable, then nail him with a paranoid fence working for the mob. What I was interested in getting opinions on was how value scales with weight for gems.
On a more productive note, this player has been coming up with a number of other creative uses for the spell, like Enlarging a vial of alchemist's fire before tossing it, or a locked chest to make it easier for the rogue to open, or a miniature painting for finer detail (FYI, I ruled +1d4 damage for the former case, and a +2 circumstance to the Open Lock and Craft: Painting checks, respectively, for the latter).
