I find this interesting because it is the opposite of what Psion said, which is "we should not second guess the motives of the voter." Your statement INSISTS that the voter have a perfect motive, otherwise the system goes awry. The legitimacy of an award should not hang its hat on the purity of voter motive. :)

As with any election, one must depend on the voters voting for whomever they feel is the best candidate. Obviously that isn't always true in the real world. But I'm an idealist. If you want to argue semantics with me, OK - you win. Now that that's been decided, I think the discussion would be better served by getting past what everyone thinks everyone else means, and proving they're wrong, and getting down to brass tacks. The current system is in place for this year. Is it perfect? I don't know. If you, or anyone else, has a concrete alternative for next year, then by all means, please lay it out clearly so that even a mook like me can understand it - facts, figures, charts, the whole nine yards, but presented so that someone who has a hard time doing long division (EDIT: like me!) can figure it out.

Sheesh. I thought this was gonna be fun. ;)

EDIT: I'm sorry to sound so harsh.

Well, amazingly, this system is terrible for what you want it for. But, since we can't change it this year, there's probably no reason to continue discussing it.

The alternative is simple, and from the sound of it was already proposed by Psion but rejected (I may be reading into what he said).

Just allow people to vote for for all the products they think deserve to win. Checkboxes. Not sinking all other products by ZEROing them out of existence.

Congrts nominees and good job judges! I'm betting you are all relieved to be done with your duties.

Personally, I'm pulling for these:

Setting Suppliment: Book of the Righteous
Campaign Setting: Nyambe
Campaign WebSite: Conan d20 (again!) or Inzeldun (Vincent gets TWO nominations!)
Publisher: Green Ronin or Malhavoc

So, you read the kenzerco boards today, too, eh? ;)

It wasn't rejected so much as it was already in place and I guess I didn't say enough before it was in place.

I digested a few articles on voting methods, and for this sort of vote it seems that what someone called "approval voting" is generally the best for this sort of thing. But the reason I am not quite as concerned as you are is that, if everyone votes 10 or 0, this method is effectively identical to approval voting.

I think the idea of doing weighted voting has merit, but as has already been mentioned, it's abusable. The IMDB discussion comes to mind.

I have a mathematical idea of how we could fix it (basically, weight the vote inveresely proportional to how much they game it... :) ), but those things often introduce their own problems.

I just wanted to chime in with a big "THANKS!" for the ENnies nomination and honorable mention. It means a lot to me that a bunch of people I've never met face to face would go to all sorts of trouble to let me know they like my work. I'm honored and touched.

Thanks!

Let me add another "Thank You!" to the judges for ... er... judging that Counter Collection 3 was good for a nomination this year! So much is poured into those tiny 1-inch pictures, it makes it all worth it to see that other people like 'em!

Not to mention the other products I contributed to who got nominated: West Wood Barony pdf (FDP), www.fierydragon.com , Tome of Horrors (Necromancer) and the Swords Into Plowshares project (SKR).

Thanks a bunch! :D
