mearls said:I've been mulling this issue over for a while, since it's important to me on two levels:
1. I wanted to include as many people as possible.
1a. We were going to miss people no matter what; I'm not perfect.
1b. I really don't want anyone to feel offended if they were overlooked.
1c. FWIW, I wasn't the only one to look over the list before it went out.
2. I really don't want to turn this into "Well, X was on the list, and Y's not, so it sucks."
2a. One of the guiding principles I have in place for this award is that it can and will change in response to the industry's needs. I've seen other awards run without any regard for the concerns of designers and publishers, and I don't want to happen to the peer award.
2b. Once this year's awards are done, I'm going to jump into getting next year's ready.
2c. Next year, I hope to have a much more comprehensive level of industry participation.
So, if you're not on the list and should be my sincerest apologies. I know I'd be ticked if I wasn't on the list. We did get over 60 people on the final list, and next year the process will start much earlier and include a much broader effort to get people involved. Due to time constraints this year, I shouldered as much of the work as possible to ensure that things would get done on time.
I'm not asking because I feel left out. I actually would have been surprised if I'd been asked. I'm just curious who is on the list. Now, whether that makes the award devolve into a X won because A, B, and C were on the committee is no concern of mine. I just have a firm belief in openness. I find it hard to take an award from Mearls' Secret Cabal of Industry Insiders* much more seriously than an award for best role-playing supplement from Motor Trend magazine**. (Okay, with Mike's name attached to it. it gets more street credibility than Motor Trend. But with the voters unnamed, not much more.)mearls said:So, if you're not on the list and should be my sincerest apologies. I know I'd be ticked if I wasn't on the list. I still don't see the big deal. I already have a small list just from the people who've said they were invited. It's Mike's award he can keep the list private or not. The way he has chosen to handle the list speaks for itself. He thinks its better to keep the list secret, that's his perogative. I think it's a mistake. No one's really jumped in on my side so I see no reason to beat this horse any longer. See you at GenCon.MEG Hal said:I think Mearls may have wanted to keep it private not to make it a secret organization, rather then listing all who said yes (there were a lot). I will be happy if we won this *secret award* or not... would it be OK to have a small list from him on who was on the list, rather then list them all? Just trying to find a happy medium.
