Surface Gnomes
Gnomes are a race without a homeland. Despite the best efforts of their god, Greyl'k, the valley hey called home was over-run by Hobgoblins. Many Gnomes were taken as slaves. Many of the gnomes who were able to flee have settled in the kingdoms of other races. Others work to free their enslaved brothers from the hobgoblins.

In spite of their hardship, gnomes remain playful and free-spirited. They are given to humor and trickery; in fact, it is their good spirits that has given them the strength to soldier on in the face of hardship.

Appearance: X

Relations: X

Religion: The most common gods for them to worship are Targan, Nylaethia, Horun, and Os.

Gnome Lands: Surface Gnomes have no lands of their own, though those who escaped the Ulruz conquest so long ago have spread across Aerde, and may now be found in small numbers in most Human cities, some other cities, and in small settlements wherever their feet have taken them.

Languages: X.

Racial Abilities: Surface Gnome characters have all the racial traits listed in the Player's Handbook.

Deep Gnomes
In the chaos following the invasion of their valley, some gnomes fled deep into the mountains, and into the underdark. These gnomes were changed, given the ability to survive there by Greyl'k, and they became the Deep Gnomes.

Deep Gnomes are suspicious creatures, quite unlike their cousins. Centuries of living in the Underdark, amongst creatures more dangerous than anything in the Ulruzian Empire have forced them to lose their childlike innocence, a fact that saddens Greyl'k greatly.

Appearance: Per the PHB.

Relations: Gnomes have formed an active resistance movement within Ulruz. They will strike at Hobgoblin and Goblin military units in acts of sabotage and murder whenever they have the opportunity. Relations with elves and halflings tend to be quite good. Relations with other races are predicated upon the Gnome’s view of that race’s attitude towards their oppressors. If the race is friendly with the Hobgoblins and Goblins, Gnomes will take a dim view towards them.

Religion: All Gnomes revere Grelyk as the father of their race. Other commonly worshipped deities are Urvon, Horun, Nylaethia, Suerl, and Syri. There is an active cult following dedicated to Lunakav in the Gnome community.

Gnome Lands: Surface Gnomes have no lands of their own, though those who escaped the Ulruz conquest so long ago have spread across Aerde, and may now be found in small numbers in most Human cities, some other cities, and in small settlements wherever their feet have taken them.

Languages: All Gnomes learn Tradespeak. Gnomes have retained their racial language that is kept as a closely guarded secret. The elves of Lorlynia maintain knowledge of this language from their historic contact with the gnomes prior to their conquest by Ulruz. Bonus languages are Draconic, Galvic, Forestal, Giantish, Thusesti and Orcish.

Racial Abilities and Modifiers: Surface Gnome characters have all the racial traits listed in the Player's Handbook.

Appearance: These gnomes are wiry in build and have rock colored skin. Skin tones range from dull brown to grays. The males are bald and females have stringy gray hair.

Relations: Deep Gnomes form few lasting relationships. This is in part due to their neighbors in the Underdark. There are few creatures that are trustworthy in that realm. Their outlook of outsiders is skewed from this into distrust of anyone who is unknown. Deep Gnomes will hide and use their innate magical abilities to mislead strangers along their route into traps or the lairs of powerful neighbors. Better to make it someone else’s problem than confront dangerous opponents.

Religion: Deep Gnomes still pay homage to Grelyk, but not to the extent that their surface cousins do. They also revere Kovar, Aethaddyn, Bajaer, Shadoth and Parushan.

Gnome Lands: Deep Gnomes live deep in the Underdark. Few ever venture upwards to the surface.

Languages: Deep Gnomes continue to speak a dialect of the secret Gnomish tongue. In addition they learn Underspeak, the trade language of the Underdark. Individuals will commonly learn the languages of their neighbors.

Racial Abilities and Modifiers:
-2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, -4 Charisma
Stonecunning as a dwarf
Darkvision out to 120 feet and low-light vision
Spell Resistance equal to 11 + class levels
+2 racial bonus on all saving throws
Add +1 to the Difficulty Class for all saving throws against illusion spells cast by Deep Gnomes. This adjustment stacks with those from similar effects, such as the Spell Focus feat.
+1 racial bonus on attack rolls against kobolds and goblinoids
+4 dodge bonus to Armor Class against all creatures
Spell Like Abilities: 1/day – blindness/deafness (typical save DC 13), blur, disguise self. Caster level equals the Deep Gnomes class levels. The save DC is Charisma-based and include a +4 racial modifier.
Nondectection (Su): A Deep Gnome has a continuous Nondetection ability as the spell (caster level equal to class levels).
+2 racial bonus on Craft (Alchemy) and Listen checks.
+2 racial bonus on Hide checks, which improves to +4 underground.
Favored Class: Rogue
ECL +3
