Enworld Short Story Smackdown (aka Ceramic DM) - sign-up thread

This sounds very cool. Go ahead and count me in as one of the writers. Also, I see that there's a limited amount of time to produce a story - out of curiosity, how much time are we talking typically?

Take a look at post #3 by Rodirigo- the orange "another" is a link to the FAQs. You will have 72 hours from the time your diabolically evil pictures are posted to write some brilliant prose.

It is! :D

It's also incredibly challenging, a pain in the arse (sometimes) and a true test of one's character.

Again, please feel free to correct me if I am mistaken in this, or if the majority feel otherwise.
As a judge, I was and would be willing to read or accept just about anything. Over the past few, there have been a few competitors who have decided to push the short story envelope stylistically but not in terms of a different type or form.

tadk was notorious for this type of submission and from a judge's perspective, it was really tough to judge two completely disparate pieces. It certainly stretched my own competency to effectively "intepret" a piece well enough to properly judge it.

While I prefer more accessible entries myself, I would never penalise an entry based upon style or format.

Is this the official sign-up thread? If writers are still needed for this I'd like to throw my cranial clothing accessory into the rectangular fighting area.

I really want to participate, but the timing might be tricky; I have the end of ENnies judging, followed by work crunch until I get a game out the door. I'm going to be useless until August.

I'll be in for Autumn, though! :D

Your odds are much better now, though.

Yes, this has become the official sign-up thread. Again, the official contest thread I'll ask one of the judges to start after the judges/contestants are solidified.

I'm going to shoot for 3 judges, with 1 alt, and 16 contestants, with 2 alts. From what I have seen in the past, everybody likes to avoid odd numbers - well, numbers that aren't powers of 2 (and resulting byes or 3-way contests or what not) and more rounds tend to drag it out a bit. As always, any dissenting viewpoints are welcome. So far we have 7 definite writers, a couple possible writers, and 3 possible judges (though a couple of them would prefer being writers). As we get close to 16 writers, or when posts slow down, I will try to get more firm commitments from 3 judges, and go from there. If we end up with less than 16 contestants, well, so be it.

PC, sorry to hear the timing is bad for you. Certainly I'll talk to you before I stir up the hornet's nest next time!

Aaron

Thanks Rodrigo :)

As far as picking pics, I have no idea. I thought maybe I'd let the judges decide that among themselves. In the past, all I know is someone or other offered to, I have no idea where they found the pics or how they decided on them. Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Aaron

p.s. I think that means you're running the show along with the other judges, if that's ok with you and unless you have other ideas/plans
