ENWorld Summer Tournament? (retitled)

I was considering arranging an ENWorld Summer Tournament, with jousts, spellcasting duels, and card games, using the rules from Natural 20 Press's Tournaments, Fairs, & Taverns. We'd let people make characters to compete, and everyone would probably be the same level. Maybe 5th or so. Perhaps we could have a fund-raiser of sorts, and let people who donate to ENWorld play 7th level characters.

So we'd have a grand joust (including races, obstacle courses, mounted archery, a horse fashion show, and finally the joust itself), a magical tourney (various spell duels, plus a few Bahly games), an archery competition, and a card game tournament (poker, probably). If we could manage to get a few companies to sign on, we might be able to give prizes to the winners.

Since there's already been some interest expressed here, let me go through some of the details of what we'd need to do to make this work.

* Get Russ to approve the idea. We'll be using his site, and using Nat20 material, but I think he'll okay it if we can make it seem doable.

* Figure out how to do it. We'll probably need a lot of chat room channels (though the boards are an option, albeit a slow one). Also, if we want people to make their characters in advance, they'll need to upload them to a site, so we'll need to set that up to.

* I want to contact a lot of publishers and see if they're interested. For each product they put up as a prize, they get to enter a champion in one of the four competitions. If their champion wins the competition, then the product that company put up as a prize instead goes to the runner up.

* We'll need to clarify what the rules are, particularly for making characters. All of they system reference document is fair game, as is anything from Tournaments, Fairs, & Taverns. I'd also like to have various companies put up some of their OGC on a communal website that will host all the rules. If you want your champion to use some particular rule that you've made up, send it to us, and as long as we don't think it will mess with the proceedings too much, we'll include it as part of the official rules of the tournament. Nothing that is not Open Content will be allowed.

* We have to figure out the legalities of this. Since I would like to have a fund-raiser of sorts by letting people pay for the ability to register a higher-level character, I'd need all contributors to give their OK for the funds to go to ENWorld. Also, if we're using large amounts of OGC, I don't know how electronic chatroom usage might interact with the Open Gaming License.

* Once we decide on a date, we'll have to announce it. I suggest we announce it by July 25th, so we don't get covered up by GenCon coverage. I think that the third weekend in August would be a good day. Saturday, August 17th, from 6 pm to 6 am, GMT. That gives everyone around the world a fair shot at playing for at least a little while.

* I also want to set up a way to let people play common fairground games, like horseshoe tosses, log throws, and so on. Even if you don't register in advance, you can show up and roleplay as a 1st level commoner, with all average stats (all 10s). People who win these fairground games should get a small measure of recognition, such as being listed on a webpage once the whole tournament is over.

So, how does this sound?

Repost from other thread - Oopsie! I've been getting some feedback that RangerWickett already had some specific ideas along these lines of how this should transpire. I'll leave my suggestions in the thread for him to use as he might like and look forward to the event. Keep your eyes open for the tourney! I'll be expecting much blood, clashing of swords and shattering of lances! :)

Suggestion

A suggestion would be to post a preview of 3 or 4 different tournaments (jousting, mage duel, card game, etc.) from the sourcebook, that way everyone could participate and people could get a sneak peek at the rules contained within the product.

Otherwise, I think the idea sounds grand.

Dagnabit! I would post a long, involved reply just before the boards are about to be rebooted. Grr!

Well, okay, give me half an hour, and I'll repost what I already typed at 3 am.
