I'm sure a couple years down the road they'll have something better with bigger dimensions and a bit flatter, perfectly suited to use as a digital map on the table. But for now, we've got this ePawn and it's not too bad. I just wish I could afford it!

An iPad would be far too xmall. What if two characters wanted to move more than a few squares apart?

The SurfaceScapes team already solved this problem. When the map is dragged such that the position of minis on top of the screen is different from their last location on the digital map, arrows are dynamically drawn from the minis' physical location on the screen to their off-screen, in-game location. This way you can keep track of everyone's position while viewing other areas of the map or moving minis too far away to see all at once. It's really quite brilliant, and it means that you can, quite functionally, have maps of enormous (read: potentially infinite) size and pan and zoom as needed.

Next step: integrate WiFi (or better yet, make the screen a WLAN hotspot) and develop iOS and Android apps for individual user control and the ability to view the map/character sheet and decide on actions while that player is waiting for his turn.

I'm not so sure about this item. I want to see it working before passing a real judgement on it. I checked there website and it seemed vague to me.
There is a you tube video but it is just a bunch of photos.

I can't wait for the 4 x 8 foot wargaming tabletop with terrain, weather effects, fog or war options for not revealing troops until seen, etc.

This is the best I have seen beside the sufacescape one.
