Epic Adventurers v. Kobolds?

the Jester

Legend
Anyone ever take an epic group through a low-level adventure? My group and I were discussing this the other night- I think it would be a kick to run a 'kobold warrens' or similar adventure for epic pcs and give them the chance to flex their muscles.

Of course, I wouldn't want to do that every session, that's for sure! But as a side adventure....

Any of the epic dms here have any similar experiences?

its not even worth it to roll at that point. once your past 7th level the only way you can miss a kobold is to roll a natural 1, and your hits will always kill them.

have then run through a fortress full of orc barbarians (maybe 3rd or 4th lvl) so that the players dont ge bored.

about one of every four or so adventures I run is deliberately pitched well and truly below the averade party level, just so they can see themselves rising in ability and have the joy of being truly heroic.

I haven't done it with epic levels yet, but I did run an 18th level party through a 5th kevel adventure with a focus on orcs,

I could maybe see somebody doing that once in a great while.

Perhaps, have the kobolds plan to strap alchemist bombs to themself then run at the players in suicidal rage. They could all try to pile on at once, and then ignite themselves. Or they could get hit with a fireball and suffer a chain reaction where they blow thousands of themselves up all at once.

Kobolds are realy a lot smarter than that though, but it won't take that long and it would be pretty funny. ;) (unless you like Kobolds that is)

LOl I once posted a question over at the DnD rules board which got a good thread going on just this topic. The question was 'What is the CR/ECL of 400 Kobolds?'

The set-up was that the PCs were protecting a group of refugees (commoners) who had been forced to flee their village by more powerful monsters. They headed for an old fortress to seek shelter only to discover that a tribe of 400 kobolds had moved in!

The suggestions I got might be helpful

1. Treat the Kobolds like bad weather (ie dangerous environment where exposure might cause damage)
2. Kobolds are smart - use lots of traps/ranged attack from ambush (no direct melee)
3. Kobolds are small - use tunnels and underground bunkers that the PCs can't easily access
4. Kobolds are scorcerous - use alchemist fire and lots of magic (in traps and ambushes)
5. Kobolds are humanoid - give a few Class levels (or even templates)
6. Remember the PCS can't just destroy the fortress because they want it for the NPC commoners
8. The Challenge isn't to destroy all the kobolds but to protect the commoners (which gives the PCs lots of options)

Either you have to give kobolds loads of class levels - and by that point, you could as well run a regular adventure - or this is going to be ridiculously easy. Most epic characters could take down an army of CR 1 and less creatures without even taking damage. The last epic characters I made found himself in the middle of an orc army and he simply ignored them while taking care of his business.

No way, the kobolds of the warrens will KILL your epic adventurers. Kobolds can kill anyone they want. Kobolds cut off heads ALL the time and don't even think twice about it. Kobolds are so crazy and awesome that they flip out ALL the time. In my campaign there was this kobold who was drinking at a tavern, and when some dude dropped a mug, the kobold killed the whole town. Kobolds are fast, smooth, cool, strong, powerful, and sweet. The kobolds of the warrens will laugh at your epic party then kill them in like 2 seconds.
