Epic level DCC 33: Belly of the Great Beast

**WARNING*** Potential spoilers below, I tried to stay ambiguous, but important clues will ruin things for players***

Just got this today. I have only had the Dungeon adventures as examples of Epic level play. I must say this is a cool adventure. Definitely one that would take me out of "my box" as far as adventure creation, because I sure wouldn't design something like this. They even wrote up pre-gens to play or use as additional "bad guys".

About the only thing I would nit pick about this module is the lead-ins, or set-ups, that are suggested for hooking the players in. I have only played or DMed 4 or 5 games at this level, and all I can say is the suggested hooks would never have worked on my parties. The adventure also seems to be written as if teleportation doesn't exist. So if you use this adventure you probably shoudl shore up the "teleportation holes" in this adventure.

Maybe I just missed it but the "eggs" and the "beast" should block all teleportation and plane travelling. As a side effect, or maybe even intentional result, all divinations attempted inside of these things should also be blocked, as well as all scrying. I would make all teleportation only possible with things related to the Beast, or wearing the Talisman.

Other than that I like the use of PRC's and creature Templates. Interesting mixes and cool advanced creatures. I also like the creative uses of some creatures. Should be a cool adventure for an Epic level party. I give this a 4/5 for what I like and dislike in a module. Glad I got it.

Interesting mini-review.

Good suggestions, but a little bit disappointing in my book. An adventure of this level should assume those spells are flying around and be designed accordingly.

Yep. Just illustrates why people are so reluctant to do Epic level games adventures. ITs wide open. They have wishes, miracles, ressurections, teleportations, etc... to throw a monkey wrench into just about any game design you can come up with. I think the reality is that Epic level adventurs have to be custom designed to the individual party.

So the best I hope for is a idea that I can fix up to be a challenge to my group. I think Belly of the Beast is capable of being fixed for most game groups. Plus it will probably thrill Spelljammer fans because they could use this as an excuse to get into the Spelljammer stuff.

The main thing is that the "challenges" should be good challenges for an Epic level party. Especially if the bad guys group up.

They do have a really wicked assassin I would have fun playing around with as the DM.
