Epic PrCs... an afterthought?

I've been browsing the web enhancement and flipped through the book at my hobby store, and thought that the Epic Prestige Classes extensions are totally unexciting. It just seems like they were more of an afterthough and were done up as quickly as possible. Look at the Epic Bladesinger; wouldn't he have skills that would be even more epic or interesting? Shouldn't the Dragon Disciple eventually become a Dragon? Instead, they just get to use their existing powers a little more often, a little more powerfully, and a couple of extra bonus feats thrown in that others not in their PrC would have received anyway.

Yes, it's a lot of work to 'extend' all the PrCs that heve been done, but it would at least make taking them beyond the 10th level more interesting.

Its not " lot more work." Its impossible.

The ELH is designed to go from level 21 and up. Sure, you could tack 5-10 more levels onto prestige classes, but then you've got the problem of where to go after that. The way they did it works great. If you want a Dragon Disciple to be able to become a dragon, give them access to a few feats that further bridge the gap. Want a bladesinger with more powerful abilities? Make up new feats.

What they did is realize that the powers of these epic people with vary becasue of the sheer number of options. So, instead of giving specific powers, they made them feats and gave all the lcasses feat options. So, now all you have to do is start creasting epic feats that have these high level options for the particuliar class.

See these two thread son how some of us are trying to do this.

I don't think it's impossible. Look at the Soulreaver, the Unholy Ravager and the Master of the Order of the Bow PrCs in Dragon #297. They're logical extensions of the Assassin, Ravager and the Order of the Bow Initiate. They get more interesting abilities, as well as Bonus Feats. I think if a little more work were put into the extension of the existing PrCs, they'd be even more feasible, and interesting.

That is true, but they are new prestige classes. The Epic Prestige classes in ELH are more interesting then the extensions of normal prestige classes.

THey have specific rules for extending prestige classes that are dry and boring but simple enough that it is easy to do. Then they have feats to supply the extra punch these get.

THe Epic Prestige classes are more interesting because the powers are designed for higher level characters. But they get the same stuff over and over like the others eventually.

My suggestion is go to House rules and start a thread on one of the prestige classes you'd like to see extended in a way that you like. ASking what people think about an issue is important, but so is getting dirty and trying to fix the problem yourself.

Corthy, are they talking about any d20 Prestige classes there or not?

So far it's just the Epic Oozemaster and Epic Sellsword. But any other prestege class that gets posted there I'm more then happy to help with. :D

So far those two choices were made because they are what is being played by the person. So, I think its just coincidence they are both from wizards products.

Actually, I'm not the one playing a Spellsword - one of the players in my game is. None of my PCs are anywhere near a prestige class. :D

As for non-WOTC ones, I eventually plan to take the 3 or 4 'guildmaster' PrCs that I've found (T&T, QR(?), Freeport, I think somewhere else) and try to distill a single Crimelord PrC, which could easily move into epic levels - but other than that, I haven't had a need for it either.

Are you looking for Epic prestige classes for the Scarred Lands or for Epic advancements of the Scarred Lands prestige classes? ;)
