Erick Wujcik

I've met the man a couple of time, and even played in a few of his games at cons, so it saddens me to pass along this news. Erick has terminal cancer. You can read the details on the web page below.

Eric is the brain responsible for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles RPG, Amber Diceless RPG, and many other games and supplements.

He will be missed.

Sorry if this is a dupe.

That really sucks. I remember playing one of his Palladium games, and we had fun with it for a few weeks, at least. What an awful way to find out you're dying though, eh?

Of course, these things turn around sometimes. You never know, I guess.

Hopefully, this thread doesn't turn into a "well, Palladium sucks anyways" fest.

That's awful. I had some fine times playing TMNT in high school. If it weren't for Erick, I never would have played a mutant otter daredevil. And even for a roleplayer, that's new ground.

A phenomenal designer, and a really nice guy, too. And that's a terrible way to go, so suddenly and everything. That's like winning the lottery of suckage. I wish I knew what to say. TMNT was a formative gaming experience for me. I would have to say that when I was a teenager I thought I might like to be Erick Wujcik when I grew up... I wondered how you got a job like writing the TMNT RPG, and even at that young age I could tell it was a phenomenal design.

I wish him the best of luck in his recovery.

He put together the Amber Diceless game didn't he? I seem to remember reading something where he talked to Zelazny and got his blessing personally for the project.

Live well, Erick

No one has mentioned two of my favorites: Beyond the Supernatural (Palladium), and the computer game Return to Krondor.

He has made some great games, that's for sure. I met him at the first GenCon I ever went to,
and got a chance to chat some. It's a fond memory of mine--here's hoping he beats the thing.

Remember, Erick, life is diceless. :-)

I love Amber Diceless -- it astonished me when it came out, as a revolutionary moment in RPG history, and is still a mind-blowingly provocative solution to RPG design, one that still stirs a love-it-or-hate-it response. My sympathies to Erick and his friends and family, and thanks for providing me and my friends with countless hours of entertainment.
Two years ago I ran an Amber campaign for a group of my high school students, only one of whom had ever read the Zelazny novels. They loved it, and as I think Erick intended, began RPing in every spare moment, with or without me, scheming, plotting, designing their own shadows, and of course, back-stabbing like crazy. To ensnare members of the WoW generation so utterly is no easy feat -- but shows that the appeal of Erick's work will endure, as long as we share it.

I met Erick at GenCon 1993 when I spent pretty much the entire con playing Amber Diceless in the open gaming area on the skybridge (for those who remember MECCA). Extraordinarily cool guy, one of the most interesting and personable of all the "gaming celebrities" I ever met (which, in 10 years of GenCons, was a lot of 'em). This is extremely sad news. I hope he realizes how much his work is appreciated and how badly he will be missed when he's no longer around. (Also, I can't help thinking of Roger Zelazny himself, who also died much too young...).
