IIRC (and I may not, because I'm too lazy to look it up), legend has it that back in "the day" in ancient Rome, Christians weren't allowed to marry. According to this legend, there was a bishop named Valentinius who would secretly marry young lovers in the catacombs beneath the city. He was caught and martyred, and then sainted by the church.
In one of my D&D campaigns, I stole this idea for my pantheon's patron deity of paladins. I wanted to fit paladins into the late medival "romantic ideal" chivalry, with courtly love and all that jazz.
