IMC Erky got tacked up (literally nailed to the wall...) by the troop of hobgoblins that showed up after Balsags request when most of the goblin warriors and the king got killed by the PCs.

Heres the scoop:

The PCs Killed the king and then decided to return to town. Well they were leveling up so they were gone for some time. In the meantime Balsag has declared himself King of the citadel, and called for aid from a troop of hobgoblins. The hobgoblins tipped the balance in favor of the goblins and they killed/chased off the kobolds. Thats when they found Erky, and so decided that non-goblins looking to make trouble (the PCs) needed a warning, and so they nailed Erky to the wall arms out two feet above the ground.

The PC upon returning did not notice the Hobgoblin scouts watching the entrance (which is covered with ice cause its the dead of winter, and Oakhurst is in the Faerunian North between Yarter and Everlund...) and found that someone was redecorating the place with kobold skulls. They entered the room where they had found meepo, and surprised a bunch of hobgoblins who were explaining to thier leader (shouts and such) that they did not think the invaders from before were going to come back, and that the silly trap that Balsag had planned was a waste of time. Thats when the PCs (who can't speak a lick of Goblin) kicked in the door and started cutting people in half. Well, the trap worked like a charm (less 14 hobgoblins) and now they are surrounded by a bunch O hobgoblins. Who will let them out one door wich leads right to Balsag and his bodygaurd who will hand them over to Belek as per the agreement...

Erky has been a captive of the kobolds for about a year.

They keep him in a cage, one sturdy enough that its bars require a DC 22 Strength check to bend.

Erky has a 14 Strength.

Regdar: "I'll get you out of there, little friend!" {Grunt, strain, BEEEEEEEND}

Erky: "Well, I'll be! I wonder why I never thought to try that?" :o

(Dilbert: "Wally's in jail. Can you help him get out?"
Dogbert: "Tell him to try the door. The guards only pretend to lock them."
Later, at work ...
Wally: " ... but I'd have to say it was the lifers who were the most embarrassed.")

Hmm, he could take 20 and bend the bars...

Probably not in too good of a situation where he has the option of spending 2 minutes trying to bend the bars. But then again, that's just me. Wait till sleep time and hope the goblins don't post a night guard.

In my game, here's what happened:

1) Erky had his gear taken from him when he was captured. That included his holy symbol, so no praying for spells then. He had to live in a tight cage, with no leverage to try and bend the bars, and had enough nonlethal damage from poor eating and sleeping.
You use the focus to cast, not pray. However, even given that, there are no requirements for the construction of a holy symbol - there's nothing to stop him from scratching out a symbol of his god (garl? Who's symbol is a rock? Why not just use a rock?) and using that.

Sunless was written as 3e was. unless i am mistaken the 'special' size bonus for grapple checks originally [ 3e playtesting] was to apply to all strenght based checks. that would be a -4 for small size class. pushing thedc out of his reach.

Can't speak for playtesting, but that never made it into the published 3E rules...

Even so , I ruled he was fatigued from the sleepless nights and used up almost all of his spells to heal himself of damage from the goblins' roughing torture. Plus the cage was wooden and slightly flexible, so he couldn't really break the bars.
